THE RIPTIDE | FALL FISHING KNOW-HOW
Where Are the Fish? Understanding Fall Water Temperatures
Fall is one of the best times to be on the lake! The summer crowds are thinning out, the air is getting crisp, and changing water temperatures can create some excellent fishing opportunities. But as the seasons change, so do the fish!
Here's what every fall lake angler should know:
Cooling Surface Water
As temperatures drop, the upper layers of the lake begin to cool. Fish that spent the summer in deeper, cooler water may become more active in shallower areas as temperatures move into their preferred range.
The Fall Turnover
In many deeper lakes, cooling surface water eventually mixes with deeper water. This process is called fall turnover.
During turnover, fish can become scattered, and fishing may be unpredictable for a while. Once conditions stabilize, fishing can improve.
Follow the Baitfish
As water temperatures change, baitfish may move into different areas of the lake. Predator fish often follow their food!
Look for activity around points, drop-offs, creek mouths, and areas where baitfish are gathering.
Don't Overlook the Afternoon Bite!
Unlike summer, when early mornings and evenings are often productive, fall fishing can improve as the day warms up.
A little afternoon sunshine may encourage fish to become more active, especially in shallow areas.
Adjust Your Fishing Depth
Don't assume the fish are still holding in their summer locations. Experiment with different depths and pay attention to your fish finder.
Remember, every lake is different, and fish species respond differently to changing temperatures.
🌊 RIPTIDE TIP:
In the fall, follow the temperature, find the baitfish, and be willing to change your fishing depth!
