Today marks one year since my mother slipped into the veil and passed. So much has happened in a year…every year but when you hit a reflective marker you actually stop and think.
I am in Savannah Georgia rite now driving to my new home in Miami. My beautiful children and husband wait for me in a safe and beautiful community to start this new chapter.
I lost allot this year, my health for a moment in a very real way, 80lbs, my hair, some friends and of course my mother to dementia. It was a cold winter filled with lessons and sorrow. In this process I felt my spine fill with iron and my gut with fire. I made the conscious decision to STOP. I removed social disrupt from my life. I stepped into the era of “I am the one.” Instead of being afraid I ran directly into the sun. I no longer have parents or elders….I am the one! I don’t need my hand held because…I am the one! I don’t need many friends around me because I am the one! I don’t need you to include me because I am the one. I don’t need you to validate my art because I am actually the one. I’m not interested in the scene because well I AM THE ONE.
My mother, father and brothers built a very strong spirit in me and watching my mother starve through dementia sealed the deal that I HAVE TO BE THE ONE. They built me for this and here I am. Slayed the sickness quietly with grace. Removed the people who use my talent but don’t support my soul. Was pursued artistically this year unlike anyone I know. Became a costume designer for an incredible dance community in NYC. Made a film with another creative and 12 models who RALLIED for the vision and to cure my sadness. Was shown globally. Showed during NYFW and was invited to close this year. Was in countless magazines and articles. Propelled our foundation for Sierra Leone past the 20k mark. Made a collection of over 40 paintings for my mother and showed/ sold them. I was offered a creative director position for a $55million dollar company which I took and am moving to Miami for.
It’s been allot, because it was always meant to be allot. I think about her, my mother everyday and miss her in layers. But most of all I am thankful for her lessons rite up to the end. Because it made me the one.
Thank you mom and like I said in your last moments….I’ll take it from here.
