At Blamo, art has always been at the foundation of what we do. Long before clothing and small object art, there was a desire to create objects with meaning, craftsmanship, and a story to tell.
Over the last eighteen months, we have been working on Behind Closed Eyes, a one-of-a-kind large-scale sculpture. Opportunities to create work at this scale are rare, and we wanted to share the journey with the Blamo community that has supported creativity, craftsmanship, and independent projects from the beginning.
Many of you know Spencer Hansen and Shayne Maratea as the co-founders of Blamo. Alongside Reuben Sadowsky, our Indonesian team, and many volunteers, we spent the last 18 months bringing Behind Closed Eyes to life.
Behind Closed Eyes is a 16-foot interactive sculpture by Spencer Hansen, hand-carved from reclaimed Indonesian teak salvaged from retired fishing vessels and structural timber. The project explores introspection, human connection, and sustainability through storied materials, traditional craftsmanship, and large-scale design.
The sculpture combines generations of woodworking knowledge with a contemporary vision, transforming reclaimed materials into something entirely new.
