This month we highlight Bill Gerrish, a Houston artist whose work reflects an ongoing engagement with material, memory, and form.

Working across two and three dimensions, he brings a quiet sensitivity to surface and composition. His recent focus on found objects transforms fragments and textures into thoughtful, considered relationships.

Time for another VAA studio visit! Join us in the East End at Box 13, Sunday 17 May, at 11am, for a mixed-media dive into the work of Madelline Vicencio. Born and raised in Texas, with recent residencies in Oaxaca and Mexico City, Vicencio explores the value of tradition and ancestral ties. Spaces are limited, so please register on our website to reserve your spot.

Vicencio’s process begins with a search for items that investigate the aesthetics of clutter. These materials range from the “immigrant clutter” of their mother’s home to the trash gathered during morning strolls. Then comes the ritual of repurposing, deconstruction, and devotion. By scavenging, these objects are given a new function as vessels of memory and preservation. The gnarly process of deconstruction layers paperwork and carves porous portals into used fabric, defamiliarizing the origin of the found objects. This is paired with handmade embellishments such as weaving, hemming stitches, and freehand crochet. Craft implements a touch of affection that prolongs thoughtful intervention. Collecting speaks to the heart of what it means to be human’ it encourages them to protect a shared history. As they excavate domestic objects, upcycling, and collage, the remnants leave behind the complexities of memory, identity, and love.

Tonight in Houston

We are at Redbud Arts Center for Sardonic Short Stories by VAA member Dave Clark and we are excited to celebrate his first solo exhibition in Houston. Congratulations Dave on this fantastic milestone.

The exhibition brings together sharp wit, bold imagery, and darkly humorous narratives in a body of work that feels timely, smart, and unforgettable.

If you are looking for something compelling to do tonight, come by Redbud and experience it in person. The opening is happening now through 9 tonight, and the show will remain on view through June 27.

This month we are honored to highlight Deborah Ellington, a Houston based artist whose practice spans over five decades of working and exhibiting as a creative.

Inspired by the emotional resonance of nature, Deborah creates both two dimensional and sculptural works that explore imagery, gesture, and form with deep curiosity and intention. Whether capturing the quiet impact of a sunset or translating organic movement into glass, her work reflects not just what we see but what we feel.

Working primarily with glass, Deborah uses it as both canvas and structure. She draws directly onto its surface using dip pens and brushes, achieving imagery reminiscent of watercolor and graphite, while also shaping glass through custom clay molds into organic sculptural forms. The result is a visual language that bridges traditional mark making with innovative material exploration.

For Deborah, creating art is essential.
It is not something she has to do but something she must do.

A longtime member of Visual Arts Alliance since the 1980s, Deborah shares, “It is a wonderful organization. I do not know of any other organization that provides the opportunities to artists.”

You can view Deborah’s work at Silver Street Studios Studio 324, and online through the links below.

So many crazy happenings today. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has been ordered to take the comma out of its name. And reports are true: Anish Kapoor’s sculpture Cloud Column actually did levitate off of its base outside the Glassell School. Make sure you’re free this Friday evening for a VAA meet-up to discuss these happenings and more.
