Young Canadians are increasingly reporting feelings of climate anxiety as Toronto experiences another summer marked by extreme heat and wildfire smoke. Rising temperatures, worsening air quality, and the growing visibility of climate-related events are leaving many young people feeling stressed, worried, and uncertain about the future.

Mental health experts say these emotions are becoming more common, especially among youth who feel the impacts of climate change in their daily lives. While climate anxiety is a natural response to environmental concerns, professionals encourage focusing on practical actions, community support, and open conversations to help manage these feelings.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, experts emphasize that addressing both climate resilience and mental well-being will be essential for supporting the next generation.

Canadians are heading back to the polls yet again. Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections in three ridings — Beaches–East York (Ontario), North Vancouver–Capilano (B.C.), and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord (Quebec) — set for Monday, August 31.

It's the third round of federal byelections this year, after an earlier set in April saw races in Toronto and Quebec's Terrebonne riding. This time, the stakes are just as sharp: the Liberals need to win only one of the three seats to keep their working majority in the House of Commons, with the party's total seat count expected to climb to 171 if they succeed.

The Beaches–East York seat opened up after Nate Erskine-Smith stepped down, while Chicoutimi–Le Fjord and North Vancouver–Capilano were vacated by MPs moving into a Senate seat and an ambassadorial post, respectively.

A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) is putting hard numbers to a crisis many emergency doctors have been living for years. Based on a 2025 survey of 410 emergency physicians across the country, one in 10 respondents said they'd already left the specialty entirely, 48% had cut back their clinical hours, and 20% had taken time off work.

The study found women and younger physicians reported the highest rates of burnout. One co-author, Dr. Kerstin de Wit of Queen's University, put it bluntly: many doctors described the health care system as "broken," with emergency departments left to absorb systemic failures with fewer resources and no real support — and little hope that things will improve.

For patients, this isn't an abstract workforce issue — it's fewer doctors available on the front lines of emergency care, at a time when Canada's health system is already stretched thin.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called three federal byelections for Monday, August 31 — in Beaches–East York (Ontario), North Vancouver–Capilano (B.C.), and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord (Quebec). The move comes as Carney looks to shore up his government's slim majority in the House of Commons ahead of the fall sitting of Parliament.

All three seats were vacated by MPs who moved on to other roles: Nate Erskine-Smith stepped down from Beaches–East York, Jonathan Wilkinson left North Vancouver–Capilano to become Canada's ambassador to the EU, and Conservative MP Richard Martel gave up Chicoutimi–Le Fjord after being appointed to the Senate.

The Chicoutimi–Le Fjord race is drawing particular attention — it's a seat the Liberals are hoping to flip from the Conservatives, which could give Carney's government a bit more breathing room heading into the fall.

British Columbia's wildfire crisis is escalating fast. As of Sunday morning, more than 140 fires are burning across the province, with 60 of them out of control. In the Cariboo region, the Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek fires have merged into a single blaze now covering more than 66,000 hectares as part of the larger Big Bar complex.

The growing fire has forced Highway 97 to close between Loon Lake Road and Chasm Road, cutting off a key route through the area. Residents of 70 Mile House are now bracing for a planned evacuation order set to take effect Monday morning, as officials warn the fire is expected to keep growing overnight.

Crews are being stretched thin, with reinforcements arriving from as far as Yukon, Alberta, and even Mexico to help battle the flames.
