Updated tune list as of 8/26/26 adding three more tunes. As stated in the rules, contestants may choose their tune in the Junior, Adult, and Senior Buck Dance categories, and in the preliminaries of the National Championship category. However, they must submit their chosen tune with their registration or the band will choose the tune. Here is the list of tunes for contestants to choose from: Down Yonder, Alabama Jubilee, Chicken Reel, Sally Goodin, Mississippi Sawyer, Ragtime Annie, Old Joe Clark, Shortenin' Bread, Durham's Bull, Cotton Eyed Joe, Arkansas Traveler, Wagoner, Cumberland Gap, Cackling Hen, Sail Away Ladies, Back Up and Push, Lost Indian, Sugar in the Gourd, Angeline the Baker, Sugar Hill and Katy Hill.

Here are the prizes for the buck dance categories at MaupinFest 2026 :

Youth Open Division

11 and Under

1st place - $50*, 2nd place - $25, 3rd place - $10

Junior Open Division

12 to 25

1st place - $200*, 2nd place - $75, 3rd place - $50

Adult Open Division
26 to 50

1st place - $200*, 2nd place - $75, 3rd place - $50

Senior Open Division
51 & Older

1st place - $200*, 2nd place - $75, 3rd place - $50

National Championship Division
All ages welcome. Contestants must qualify by winning a sanctioned dance contest.

*Thanks to the contributions of an anonymous donor, 1st place prizes in the dance categories are doubled (e.g. , $100 in the Senior, Adult, and Junior becomes $200).

Meet the buckdance contest band for 2026: Mick Kinney, Trenton "Tater" Caruthers, Jordan Judkins, and Daniel Rothwell: Mick Kinney has been fiddling since 1977 and performed at the Knoxville World Fair, Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, as well as many music camps such as Mars Hill Blue Ridge Mt Week, and Swannanoa Gathering.
He has recorded with The Georgia Crackers, The HickHoppers, and currently his family band The Griddle Lickers. Trenton "Tater" Caruthers, Jordan Judkins, and Daniel Rothwell are all alumni of the the Tennessee Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program by the Tennessee Arts Commission Tennessee Folklife Program, in which Tater has served multiple times as a master artist. Tater and Jordan are respected preservers of the old-time fiddle and string band traditions of the Cumberland Plateau. T Daniel Rothwell is the grandson of the festival's namesake, a national old-time banjo champion, and a preserver of the banjo songster tradition. They are excited to return as the dance band for MaupinFest's buck dance contest band with the addition this year of the master old-time fiddler Mick Kinney. . .
