Okay, we had an employee showing of Disclosure Day last night and I'm still thinking about it.

You can tell from the trailers it's a Spielberg alien movie, but they're vague enough that you can't really piece together what it's about going in — and I appreciated that.

It follows a cybersecurity expert who's fully committed to exposing the truth to the world, and a news weather anchor who has no idea why she's drawn down the path she's on or where it leads, just that she has to follow it. You end up piecing the whole thing together right alongside them.

The pacing kept me engaged the entire time — there's a real mystery unfolding, plus some genuinely intense action sequences. Also, Spielberg somehow brought John Williams out of retirement to score this, but it wasn't really talked about beforehand, and I didn't realize it until the end credits. Looking back, his style was all over the film and played a big part in building the tension.

Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor are great, and Colin Firth plays a much colder character than usual, which was a nice change. Visually, it's gorgeous too.
If you enjoy sci-fi, or just like a story that unfolds as a puzzle, I think you'd enjoy this one. Worth seeing on a big screen.

We got to see the new Masters of the Universe movie last night. Anyone who grew up around the He-Man cartoon knows to expect some silly things. I felt like this movie was self aware in the best way possible. If you have a nostalgic place for the original you'll enjoy this re-make. Even if the original is before your time there is a good chance you'll still smile and enjoy some of the campy humor that goes along side some fairly decent world building. It certainly won't win any awards. But, then again I don't think anyone expects it to. It's exactly what you expect it to be in a good way.

What a weekend! Backrooms has been living up to the hype — strong crowds and we couldn't be happier about it. And Obsession just keeps doing something we almost never see. Most of the time opening weekend is your biggest weekend, that's just how movies work. But three straight weekends of growing box office? That hasn't happened since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Obsession has done exactly that, and honestly it's because you all have been spreading the word. Pressure and Mando & Grogu have also been holding up nicely on the Great 8 screens.

Now a quick heads up — Michael, Sheep Detectives, and Passenger are all leaving us when the new titles open this Thursday. If any of those have been sitting on your list, $5 Ticket Tuesday is a perfect chance to catch one before they're gone. After that it's the big screen or wait for streaming!

Three new titles hit Great 8 this weekend and we genuinely don't know who comes out on top. Masters of the Universe is bringing the action-nostalgia. Scary Movie 5 is here to make you laugh. And Amazing Digital Circus — the finale of the hugely popular YouTube series — is already leading in presales. Three very different movies, and we think all three have a real shot. Come see whichever one calls your name, and thank you as always for choosing your local independent cinema and supporting your local community. It means more than you know.

Hey movie fans! First things first — thank you so much for coming out this Memorial Day weekend. It means a lot to us that you chose to spend part of your holiday with us, and we hope everyone had a safe and wonderful long weekend!

We do want to be upfront about something — because of the holiday, we weren't able to finalize next week's lineup until today, so we appreciate your patience as we get everything sorted out. We also made a big switch this week to a new point of sale system, and we're excited to share that a new rewards program is coming your way soon. More details on that as we get closer!

On to the movies — The Mandalorian & Grogu and Obsession have been our standout titles this weekend. I actually got to see both, and I have to say I really enjoyed them. Mandalorian & Grogu picks right up where the TV show left off and genuinely feels like one of many adventures ahead for Mando and Grogu — if you're a fan of the series, you'll feel right at home. Obsession had an impressive second week, actually doing better than its opening weekend, which says a lot. Passenger also opened this week and is holding its own — it's a horror film with some real depth to it. If you like your horror with actual lore and explanations behind what's happening rather than just scares, this one might be right up your alley.

A few titles are wrapping up their runs this week — Mortal Kombat II, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Project Hail Mary are all coming down. Project Hail Mary in particular has had a remarkably long run by today's standards, so if you still haven't caught any of those titles, tomorrow is going to be the last day.

As always, thank you for your support — head over to www.great8cinema.com for showtimes and tickets, and we hope to see you soon! Watch out for the release of Backrooms, and The Breadwinner this week!

Important Announcement. Today will be the last day using our current point of sale software. We are transitioning to a new solution as of tomorrow. This includes a revamp of our website as well that tightly integrates with the new software. The website will appear slightly different going forward. Below are some additional changes or items we want to highlight for your awareness.

1) All prices now include tax going forward starting 5/21. So while it looks like prices might have changed slightly, this is really just to account for the fact that we are now including tax and simplifying to avoid confusion. Not having Pennies will no longer cause confusion with rounding up or down. All prices at this point either end in .00, .25, .50, or .75. Which should simplify cash transactions significantly.

2) All gift-cards that have been purchased will honored in the new system. You don't need to do anything just come in and present your gift-card like normal and it will all work. If we do run into any issues we still have access to the old system to validate the old card. We want it to be absolutely clear that we have a commitment to making sure all gift cards are honored.

3) Prices on 3rd party websites like Fandango, or AtomTickets as of this moment look slightly off. We are working with them to correct this.

4) Do keep in mind that 3rd party sites do also have a service charge which is not new. It will always be less expensive to buy online on our website then a 3rd party website unless that 3rd party is running some sort of promotion such as what AtomTickets does in partnership with Angel Studios. We do also have a service charge on our website, with our new system but we cut those fees in half if you signup for an account and login.

5) For those of you who have been using our reward system, you may have been noticing we haven't been promoting it much, but we still have been accruing rewards for those who previously signed up, and often those folks do use those rewards. We weren't actively pushing it because we had some technical problems with maintaining it. We will be rolling out a completely revamped rewards system based on the new software very soon. It will tie online purchases with in person purchases, and will be a lot more user friendly when understanding how your rewards are redeemed and a lot more clear on how your points tie to redemption.

5) This is more for the future, but be aware that our new system will be enabling capabilities we didn't previously have. In addition to the new rewards system mentioned, we will be adding a newsletter, and more information on our website about upcoming events as well as bulletins regarding special events. In the past few months we have been working closely with the new provider and we are really happy with their willingness to take our input regarding improvements and new features.

Employees got to see Obsession last night. Boy, it was intense. It plays off the "be careful what you wish for" troupe which is a simple premise, but is extremely well done. This is Inde Navarrette's very first movie released in theaters and multiple of us felt her performance was award worthy. If your a horror, thriller fan I'd suggest not missing this one.
