It's that time of year again to invite educators to join me online for an exploration of Holistic Restorative Education through one class in the Spring or through our four-course certificate program. Please pass this on to any educators you know! Thank you! (Course and program are online. Certificate program requires five days in Vermont in July)

Feedback on the Certificate Program:

"The Holistic Restorative Education program gave me permission to slow down and be intentional and helped me realign my philosophical approach to education and my daily practice in valuable and powerful ways. I was so appreciative to be surrounded by practitioners who care deeply about education, center students always, are committed to equity, and who practice what they preach. The courses and instructors offered both content and relationship that were impactful and transformative in many ways. I very much value the intersection of personal and professional growth that happens through this program and am grateful for the opportunity to learn with and from incredible instructors and colleagues. The Holistic Restorative Ed program embodies authentic connection, deep learning, and transformative education and I recommend it highly." - Lara Scott

"The HRE Certificate Program is well worth your time. It is an investment in yourself and subsequently those you work with in your community. I felt safe enough to truly dig into my own personal reflective practice, enhance my strengths, and examine my areas of growth professionally and as a human being. Largely influenced by my classmates and professors, I feel as though I learned so much about myself, opened new doors to continue this learning, and left this program as a better person. Through four rigorous, yet manageable courses, I gained a deeper understanding of restorative practices, a better grasp on the positive role mindfulness can play in our daily lives, more awareness of systemic biases that explicitly and implicitly impact people all around us, a reinforced belief of how crucial equity and inclusion are when operating in a school community, a different perspective on the ways in which harm and trauma can influence one's upbringing and behaviors, and practical experience with implementing restorative practices in my place of work. Whether you're looking for relevant tools, a generative learning community, hands-on experience, coursework that invites one to challenge themselves or a brave space to reflect on oneself, this is the program for you." - Justin Pinard

INVOCATION

I honor your gods,
I drink at your well,
I bring an undefended heart
to our meeting place.
I have no cherished outcomes,
I will not negotiate by withholding,
I am not subject to disappointment.
Ralph Blum, from The Rune Cards

Back when I was part of Heron Dance, we published a poem that remains an important mantra in my life. Here is an excerpt from Issue 38 after we discovered it had been misattributed.

"Six years ago a friend sent along a poem called, “The Druid Vow of Friendship.” We published it and eventually put it on one of our note cards. We have since discovered that it is called, “Invocation” written by Ralph Blum. Our apologies to Mr. Blum and to St. Martin’s Press."

Course Description

This course was developed based on the premise that most teachers and students want to be part of a learning community where they experience safety, respect, equal voice, and belonging. Within such a community all members are more able to:
take the risks associated with deep engagement with learning;
speak authentically, especially when it comes to admitting mistakes or voicing concern;
begin again after failure;
have the skill–capacity–motivation to name, acknowledge and repair harm done;
experience equanimity in the face of challenges.
I
n this course we will explore mindfulness, equity, trauma informed and restorative practices as foundational and interdependent practices central to developing this kind of vital learning community. Regardless of previous training, you will be taking a deeper dive into content and applying learning to your school context so both beginners and experienced practitioners are encouraged to enroll. What is required is the desire to reflect and practice self-awareness in our interactions with students and colleagues.

Course material and assignments will challenge participants to become fluent in the principles, practices and perspectives and apply them in their milieu to transform their educational practice. Emphasis is placed on each student’s unique goals and teaching styles, providing structure, resources and support for the tricky, often challenging work of teaching content while building community and attending to the social and emotional needs of students. Finally, participants will experience the power of mindfulness and restorative practices as tools within a reflective practice, looking closely together at our teaching and personal lives.

This course is for the educator or helping professional who is ready to commit to a full exploration of these principles and practices in a way that invites significant shifts not only in how he or she teaches, counsels or manages others, but in their personal lives as well.

ROBERT REDFORD
I was a terrible student most of my life, because my mind was always out the window wondering about other things. But I drew, from the time I was about 4 or 5 years old. That was how I amused myself. But it was underneath the table, you know, on my knee. In the third grade, this teacher caught me one day. She forced me to come up in front of the class and show what was more important than listening to the lesson.”

"So I was about to be really trashed, humiliated, and I went up and I held up this thing. And she said, 'You wanna tell us what that's about?’ And so I said, 'Well yeah, these are cowboys and they're chasing the Indians, and they're shooting at the Indians and the Indians are shooting back at the cowboys, and they're about to be driven off a cliff, and above them are some B-51 bombers bombing the cowboys.'

"So what happened was, the class was interested in it. And she saw that. Instead of putting me down, she made a deal. She said, 'We'll put an easel up here, and every Wednesday we'll give you 15 minutes, and you can come draw a story for us — but then you gotta pay attention.' Now had that not happened, I would have been humiliated. It probably would have knocked me down to not trust that impulse that I had. Sometimes - I don't know about you - but maybe one or two encouragements in your life are all you need to spur you forward, rather than have you collapse." ~ Robert Redford
