Finished a new piece in the paper mache series. Controlled chaos again since I can’t help it.
“Interlace” is a sculptural vessel formed from a paper mache bowl and coiled rows of long leaf pine needles. The dark, irregular surface of the paper mache provides a grounded, almost geological body, while the pale, flexible needles are woven through and around it in continuous, looping paths.
The work began with a simple impulse to join two materials that feel slightly at odds although I believe they belong together. As the needles were bent and interlaced, the form emerged as a kind of open embrace—neither fully open nor fully closed, but both a vessel and structure. In this act of binding, the piece becomes a meditation on interconnection: how separate elements can be drawn into a single piece, becoming whole without losing their individual character.
