Jaded morning thoughts…brought to you by Melissa…

In support and solidarity, we purchased Dr Bronners limited Pride bottle this month…

Dr Bronners has long been the outdoorsy, camping soap.. It’s the only soap that Melissa will use and we usually refill our bottle, the rainbow bottle would be cool to have for a while…

At first it seemed like a great gesture and a good ethical purchase… but as I sit here with my coffee and think more about it… I’m not so sure about it anymore…

The Pride scent is cherry blossom- (most definitely not my first choice, lavender usually is, followed by almond…)

Cherry? Really? … it’s kind of a bear attractant… I’m gonna be running around the forest smelling like cherry pie and end up mauled by a hungry bear..

Not the best thought out promotion…

On the topic of forest fires… Jessica and I were reminiscing over some cocktails the other day about our first immersed controlled burn experience…

We were newbie managers and we had controlled burns in 2 of our campgrounds. One of the campgrounds was really remote and we had to go to it while the fire was still going… (we were given permission -before someone freaks out on us for being stupid 😊.)

I remember driving in amongst the smoldering landscape… the burnt smells, the crackling, the occasional flare up, while all along I can hear our ranger saying “watch out for hot spots.” We probably should have asked more questions …

It was one of the most profoundly beautiful things that we have witnessed in our nomadic lives…

Pablo Picasso once said “Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.” … the following seasons green up and blackberry crop was testament to that statement…

WatchDuty notifications go bananas every time we drive into cell service.. fire season is early this year…

If you plan on camping in the forest this summer and have a chance at connectivity, (we have Starlink so that’s not an issue,) downloading Watch Duty is a good call. It will give you real time updates on neighboring fires including evacuation zones and instructions. Staying informed helps stay alive.

Our first season in Sequoia was a smokey one.. there were several fires going all around us- we were a safe distance from fire, not so much the smoke.

Helicopters were busy above most days with aerial assists. Hume Lake often their fill source. We got a front row seat to watch a Chinook water dip and fill its tank.

We stopped at a pull out by an old burn area in the park the other day. Sadly there are several…

Sequoia (the forest, not the dog,) hasn’t had it easy the last 6 years. Catastrophic fires, floods, heavy snows and wind have taken their toll on the ecosystem.

There is a rugged beauty, a defiant resilience surfacing in the burn areas… the juxtaposition of new life encroaching on death is breathtaking..

There are VERY limited “eat out” options by us…they’re expensive and not that good.. we’re stuck cooking most days..

Interpretive Talk at Princess Campground -Dirk Charley Mono Tribe

Dirk is an amazing guy with a glowing energy. He’s a steward of both nature and humanity. A self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades, retired hotshot firefighter, and tribal liaison, Dirk brings lifetimes of knowledge and experience to every conversation.

Last night, he shared insights on cultural burning and the sacred role of fire as a tool for stewardship and renewal. He spoke about historic trade routes, the exchange of goods and knowledge, and the cooperation that was essential for survival among Indigenous communities.

Dirk also discussed the benefits of “see through” forests; improved water resources, thriving wildlife habitat, reduced wildfire risk, and landscapes that are more resilient for future generations.

An evening well spent with a remarkable storyteller, teacher, and caretaker of the land.
