Viewpoints are the heart of Grand Canyon National Park. You can wander without a plan, but you’ll miss the best angles. Start with Mather Point. It’s the gateway view and hits hard. From roughly December through April, thousands of humpback whales migrate to Maui's warm waters to breed and give birth, turning the channel between Maui, Lanai, and Molokai into essentially a whale nightclub. Boat tours are everywhere, but honestly, you can often spot breaches and tail slaps right from the shore, coffee in hand, zero seasickness involved.

It would be dishonest, and frankly tone-deaf, to write a Maui guide without acknowledging the devastating 2023 wildfire that swept through Lahaina, a historic whaling town that was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The community lost lives, homes, and irreplaceable history, and recovery is very much ongoing. If you visit, do so respectfully: support local businesses that have reopened, follow any posted guidance, and remember that this is a community rebuilding, not a photo backdrop.

Let’s get one thing straight: Maui did not ask to be perfect, and yet here we are. This is an island so absurdly scenic that even its traffic jams have ocean views. You will spend your vacation genuinely confused about how a single landmass can contain rainforest, desert, snow-capped volcano, and 80-degree beach weather within a 45-minute drive of each other. Maui isn’t showing off. Maui just is like this.

Molokini Crater, the crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater a few miles off the coast, is basically nature's aquarium, an ideal localized space for snorkeling. The water clarity is absurd, visibility often exceeds 100 feet, and the fish do not seem to have gotten the memo that they're supposed to be camera-shy. Boat tours run out of Maalaea Harbor most mornings, and yes, you will see a sea turtle, because sea turtles in Maui apparently unionized and demanded mandatory tourist appearances.
