The Legacy Museum was established as a way to honor the participants in the United States Public Health Service Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male in Macon County, Alabama. Plans included an exhibition that would place the study in the context of Tuskegee University’s (1932-1972.) This most pertinent museum also displays rich art, artifacts and archival collections to introduce students

and the general public to the field of bioethics.

“The Department of Health and Human Services will award a planning grant to Tuskegee University to pursue establishing a center for bioethics in research and healthcare. The center will serve as a museum of the study and support efforts to address its legacy and strengthen bioethics training.”
-President William Jefferson Clinton, May 16, 1997

This great museum not only serves as a reminder of the many tragedies that have befallen African-Americans throughout history, but also as a communication medium that portrays the prospective and transcendence of some of our nation’s strongest and brightest individuals. The Legacy Museum is a cornerstone for the concentration of which it was founded. Our mission is to convey the messages housed here at the Legacy, thus, encouraging all those we encounter to leave their OWN legacy.

In light of the recent tragedy on the campus, in which the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has made an arrest, the university will close Monday and Tuesday.

Students have access to counselors 24/7 by calling 1-888-850-4301 and should use that service as needed or contact Student Health. Employee insurance includes an employee assistance program (EAP) and employees have up to five free virtual professional counseling sessions for emotional assistance by calling 1-888-475-3827.

While law enforcement officers continue their investigation, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to share it anonymously through their hotline: 334-215-7067.

As we navigate this challenge as a family, keep our students, faculty, staff, and community in mind as some work to heal physically and mentally from this event. The university experienced an exceptional Homecoming weekend, and this act of violence has tarnished it. Asking for help is a sign of strength and not weakness. Standing strong together is also the Tuskegee Way.

Just in time for Halloween and Dias De Las Mu***os, we just added Tuskegee University Cemetery Stories: The Lives That Built A Great American Educational Institution by longtime Tuskegee resident, Lanice P. Middleton. Her book details the individuals interred in the University Cemetery both those named and unnamed.

The small portrait displayed next to the book is Mrs. Middleton at age 5 as drawn by artist and alum Charles C. Dawson.
