On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court decided the case of Brown v Board of Education of Topeka. In this landmark case, the court ruled:

"Segregation of white and Negro children in public schools of a state solely on the basis of race, pursuant to state laws permitting or requiring such segregation, denies Negro children the equal protection of laws guaranteed by the 14th Amendment."

Thurgood Marshall was the lead attorney on the case.

Alabama’s congressional map is back in the spotlight after a federal court temporarily blocked the state from using a Republican-backed redistricting plan for the upcoming midterms. The ruling means Alabama must continue using the court-ordered map from 2024, which includes two majority-Black districts instead of one.

The three-judge panel found the 2023 map intentionally discriminated against Black voters, arguing it violated the 14th Amendment. Black voters and civil rights advocates had challenged the map, warning the state was attempting to redraw district lines in the middle of an election year while weakening Black political representation.

The decision is also a major setback for Republicans hoping to regain a key congressional seat in November. Still, the fight isn’t over. Alabama officials are expected to appeal, potentially sending the case back to the U.S. Supreme Court in another chapter of the South’s ongoing battle over voting rights, representation, and political power.
