The Huxford Symphony Orchestra is one of the elite performing ensembles at the University of Alabama. With six concerts, an opera, and several outreach events each year, the HSO is a staple within the University of Alabama School of Music. Assistant Conductor J.R. Speake conducts Debussy's Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune

J. R. Speake is an Alabama-born composer and conductor pursuing his Masters of Music in Composition at the University of Alabama.

As the Associate Director of the University of Alabama Contemporary Ensemble, J. R. made his conducting debut in 2019, performing Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite for 13 Instruments. J. R. currently serves as the Assistant Conductor of the Huxford Symphony Orchestra. Recently, he assisted Dr. Jamie Reeves with the University of Alabama Opera Theatre’s production of Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin. In the summer of 2021, J. R. participated in the National Orchestral Institute’s inaugural conducting academy. As an auditor, he observed and worked with conductors Marin Alsop and James Ross.

J. R.’s primary instructors are Dr. Amir Zaheri (composition) and Dr. Jamie Reeves (conducting). In the fall of 2017, he received his Bachelor of Music in Composition while studying with Amir Zaheri and formerly with C. P. First.

Jorge Diez- Graduate Division Winner
Carl Maria von Weber- Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major

Jorge Diez born in Medellin, Colombia, recognized as a versatile clarinetist in fields such as orchestral and chamber music.

Before moving to the U.S, he was an active orchestra player and freelancer based in Medellin, Colombia. Diez has been part of the Zulia Symphony Orchestra, the Simon Bolivar concert band and Estudio Polifonico Orchestra. Additionally, he performed with the Simon Bolivar orchestra, Medellin Philharmonic, The Prolirica Colombia, the Columbus Ballet (US), the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Tuscaloosa Symphony, Meridian Symphony. Huntsville Symphony, among others.

Diez has performed in important venues in Venezuela, Colombia, Italy, Spain, and the United States and important events as the ClarinetFest, Bergamo chamber music festival, Medellin music festival among others. He was the winner of the Rafael Urdaneta young soloist competition, where he had the opportunity to play as a soloist with the orchestra. He was a finalist in the Clarinetfest excerpt competition in 2019 and winner in the Huxford Competition 2021.

Jorge began his musical studies at the age of eleven in the Red de Escuelas de Musica de Medellin. During the second year of his undergraduate studies at the EAFIT University, Diez won a full scholarship at El Sistema de Orquestas de Venezuela. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Clarinet performance under the tutelage of the principal clarinetist of the Venezuela Symphonic Orchestra, Mark Friedman. Diez later moved to Columbus, in the United States to complete his Artist Diploma at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University with Dr. Lisa Oberlander.

Currently, Diez is Adjunct clarinet instructor at Talladega College and is pursuing his master’s degree in clarinet performance at the University of Alabama under the guidance of Dr. Osiris Molina.

Meet Ashton Jah- Undergraduate Division Winner
Villa-Lobos- Fantasia for Saxophone and Orchestra
Ashton Jah is a multidisciplinary creative from Huntsville, AL. As a Junior at the University of Alabama, he studies Music, playing the the Alto and Soprano saxophones under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Noffsinger, as well as Creative Advertising in the Minerva portfolio program housed in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Ashton has been playing concert saxophone for 10 years and has been recognized for his playing on numerous occasions. Ashton serves as the principal saxophonist in the Wind Ensemble, led by Dr. Ken Ozzello, and participates in a saxophone quartet. Within the School of Music, he serves as a member of the IDEA Committee and Student Advisory council. In addition to academics, Ashton is seen around campus in many different capacities: He serves as a member of the A-Team Executive Board with Camp 1831, works as the Visuals and Design editor for Nineteen Fifty-Six magazine, and works as a graphic designer and student assistant for the Division of Student Life.
