Great Falls Creative Movement

Great Falls Creative Movement Our program focuses on building social, emotional, spiritual and physical wellness through dance.

Great Falls Creative Movement offers unique dance programming for kids (and sometimes adults!) at our studio, our outdoor/farm location and in partnership with schools and community groups in Franklin County, MA. Great Falls Creative Movement was founded by dance educator Anna Hendricks in ‘09 and offers unique dance programming for kids (and sometimes adults!) at our studio, our outdoor/farm loca

tion and in partnership with schools and constituent-based groups in and around Franklin County, MA. Our curriculum weaves together improvisation, social dance, therapeutic dance and concert dance practices with the goal of supporting each participants’ positive relationship with their own mind/body/spirit, with each other and with the wider world. At our studio, located in downtown Turners Falls, we offer two programs during the school year: For pre-k and kindergarteners we offer: “How do you dance?” an inclusive, community-based creative dance curriculum. For elementary-aged children (1st – 6th grade) we offer: Awesome Art in Motion*, a year-long dance program for kids. This program is above all a place for kids to come together to be themselves and to learn to love each other; with dance and the body as central to what we do together. Our outdoor programs brings together dance and outdoor education with the goal of supporting the health and well-being of each participant and of the earth we live on. Our programs take place on Abanaki, Pocumtuck, Nipmuc and Mohican land- in what is now known as GIll, MA – on a part-wild/part-cultivated homestead within walking distance of the Gill Elementary School. Outdoor programming includes after school classes for elementary aged students during the school year and small scale week-long summer programs for 4 – 12 year-olds throughout the summer months. Our school and community-based programs are run in collaboration with area schools, libraries and community centers and offer free dance education through ongoing classes, artist in residencies and one-time workshops. Great Falls Creative Movement has been awarded seven STARS Residencies and has received cultural council grants in the towns of Gill, Montague, Erving, Leverett, Shuttesbury, Wendell, New Salem and Colrain.

Three months, three schools, 10 classrooms, at least 150 kids. So much dancing!!! Thank you to the Montague, Gill and Colrain cultural councils, the Hillcrest and Gill PTO and all of the teachers for welcoming me into your classrooms and making time for your students to dance! (And yes, that is a misspelling of my name, but I made it onto the full school sandwich board!!)

The spring session of “How do YOU dance” begins on March 21st! Saturdays at 10:15, pre-k (ages 4+) through 1st graders welcome. This spring we’ll be exploring how to bring stories to life through dance! It’s hard to describe in sound bites what my classes are like… but I have been teaching creative dance here in turners falls for 18 years now and love working with this age group. If you’d like to learn more, check out my website or be in touch. 🦄🐉🧚🏽‍♀️🧌

Last chance to sign up for "How do YOU dance?", a creative dance class for 4 - 6 year-olds! Saturday mornings in Turners Falls, 10:15 - 11:15. Winter session begins this Saturday and runs through early March. Join us! Link in bio...

This beginner dance class introduces children to the wide world of dance with an emphasis on community building, inclusiveness and child-driven movement exploration.

This class will ask the questions what IS dance? And how do you like to dance and why? We will explore and share our own dance styles and preferences, teaching each other our favorite movements and trying on each others’.

The winter session will then turn to focus on social dance; dances people do to connect with each other. We will learn social dances from a variety of different cultures and build skills in how to follow the rules of each dance while also letting our own unique creativity shine through.

Guest teacher #7, Abdou Sarr joined us two weeks in a row to share some dances from Senegal, West Africa. In addition to dancing and drumming, Abdou shared stories of growing up in Senegal and what it was like to move to the US speaking no English, but able to connect to folks through music and dance. Thank you Abdou for sharing with us! Abdou Sarr was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, and learned how to dance many dances in sandy streets and beaches, from acclaimed examples, such as his mother Ami Faye. In his twenties, he traveled to the US with hip hop group, Gokbi-System. They toured North America, where he graced the stage at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival, Joe’s Pub in NYC, and settled here in Western Massachusetts, where he shares stages with diverse musicians. Currently Abdou teaches as Artist in Residence at schools and with the Senegal America Project. His way of teaching is direct and endearing. His class is tailored to participants, who leave feeling the natural high of African dance, and a true connection with the continent.
