History of the Sheaf Toss:

The Sheaf Toss dates back to the Medieval Ages as a farming competition. The purpose is to see who can toss a sheaf of hay weighting between 16 and 20 lbs the greatest distance in the air using a pitch fork. Today the goal is to throw it over 30 feet in the air. Whoever has the highest toss wins. While many farmers would compete between themselves to see who could get more hay higher back in the loft it is doubtful that they ever expected it to become part of a sporting event.

An amusing myth states the origin of this event was from medieval castle sieges where the knights would use a hay fork loaded with animal droppings and bedding material which was lite on fire and thrown over the castle wall to set buildings on fire.

Good news for those who are looking for a kilt in Starkville for the games. The Costume Shop on Russell Street can order them for $20 up to a waist size of 38 and order larger sizes for $5 or $10.00 more.

A TEST FOR A MESSENGER BECOMES THE TEST OF A SOLDIER

The Highland games originated in Scotland as we all know. The games date back to the 11th century and have been credited to the Scottish King Malcolm Canmore. King Malcolm invited contestants to compete in a foot race with the aim of finding the fastest runner to become his royal messenger.

The first ever games took place at Fetteresso, which is slightly south of the Scottish Highlands. The town is famous for the Fetteresso Castle. The castle was first built during the 14th century as a towerhouse and then was rebuilt in 1762 as a Palladia manor in a Scottish Gothic style.

The games acted as “war games” and were a way of preparing men for battle. The competitions allowed the clan chief to choose his strongest men based on their performances. It tested strength, endurance and skill, all characteristics of a good fighters.

Long before the Colonist began to settle the New World, Scotland had a history and culture. In Scotland Heavy Events were already being held more than 1000 years ago. Heavy Events include an Open Stone Toss, Heavy Weight for Distance, Light Weight for Distance, Hammer Throw, Caber Toss, Sheaf, and Weight over the bar all began as tests of strength and conditioning for Scottish Warriors and then the Scottish Military.
The first historical references to the Heavy Events appear during the reign of King Malcolm III (1057-1093). The Cere Games of Fife, Scotland are considered the oldest continuous Highland Games beginning in 1314. During the Act of Proscription (1746-1782) England outland all Highland Games including the Cere Games. The Act banned all Scottish Culture, including speaking the native Gaelic, the wearing of kilts and the playing of bagpipes. The Cere Games also were not held during World War I and World War II. Even with these interruptions, The Cere Games have been held for nearly 650 years!
Over the Centuries the Heavy Events evolved from military exercises into Gatherings for the Scottish Public. These Games became an important part of Scotland’s cultural life and were brought to the United States and are held annually wherever there are enough Scots to produce an event; it is a traditional method of passing Scottish culture from one generation to the next.
