Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate freedom and honor the rich cultural contributions of Black Americans whose stories, artistry, and leadership continue to enrich our communities. We are grateful for the many singers, conductors, directors, musicians, educators, and creators who have shared their artistry with Tulsa Opera and enriched our community through their talent and storytelling.

Tulsa Opera congratulates Filstrup Resident Artist and baritone Dr. Christiaan Bester, on his promotion to Associate Professor and on acheiving tenure at Oklahoma State University, where he serves on the voice faculty and is the Director of Opera Studies.

Christiaan's research focuses on marginalized and underrepresented groups, specifically Afrikaans Art Song Literature and Art Song Literature for the LGBTQIA+ community. Last year, he published a book entitled Afrikaans Art Song Literature: Translation and Pronunciation Guide with Oxford University Press and has toured the US giving lectures and recitals on the topic.

Christiaan will appear in Tulsa Opera's upcoming production of Mozart's THE IMPRESARIO, a company premiere.

Tulsa Opera is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Harvey Gaspar, a respected internist and passionate patron of the arts, especially classical music, jazz, and opera. He was involved with Chamber Music Tulsa and the Tulsa District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and a patron of Tulsa Opera for over 40 years.

Born in Omaha, NE , Dr. Gaspar grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from the OU College of Medicine. He interned at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, and proudly served for seven years as a US Navy physician, including a tour in Okinawa, Japan.

Dr. Gaspar's career spanned forty years, during which he cared for patients via private practice, Warren Clinic, St. Francis Hospital, and Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic. He retired in 2003.

Dr. Gaspar is survived by Phyllis, his beloved wife of 58 years; his brother Harold; his son Scott, and his daughter Lori.

He will be remembered for saving lives, serving his country, and sharing kindness and wisdom with all who knew him.

The family has planned a private memorial service. They ask that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tulsa Opera. We extend our sympathies to Dr. Harvey's friends, family, and the many people whose lives he touched with his healing gift and skill. His presence at the opera will be deeply missed.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag of the United States. Today, Flag Day commemorates the history of the American flag and the ideals it represents.

Today we celebrate the rich tapestry of people, cultures, and stories that make up our nation and the communities we serve through the arts.
