LESLIE HAMRICK: VESSELS & ALTARSCAPES | PART VI

In Part Six, Leslie Hamrick discusses the evolution of her work from vibrant colors toward a more restrained palette of earth tones, influenced by an artist residency in Ireland in 2020. Moving from bright paints and tissue paper to charcoal and graphite, she began to explore positive and negative space and a deeper appreciation for subtle color, including a rare aubergine paper. Her use of water-soluble graphite alongside the harder qualities of charcoal reflects a recurring duality within her work.

CAT is hosting a Gathering to see and hear the organizers of the next big protest against this oppressive regime TONIGHT AT 4:45pm. This will be for anyone who is wanting to learn about the plans already in place and to brainstorm what local Artists and Arts Organizations might do during “Fall of Freedom” in October just before the primaries. The Zoom presentation begins at 5pm, so don’t be late.

LESLIE HAMRICK: VESSELS & ALTARSCAPES PART V

In Part Five, Leslie Hamrick continues her reflection on Heket, the ancient Egyptian frog goddess who first captured her attention at an artist retreat in 2021. Having become an empty nester the year before, she found in Heket a symbol suited to that particular season of her life, one bound up with transformation and renewal. She traces a kinship between Heket and the Sheila Na Gig figures carved into churches and castles across Ireland, drawn together across cultures by their shared associations with fertility and change. That lineage runs through her current frog designs, which carry forward the frog’s old and lasting connection to spring and metamorphosis in both Egyptian and Irish tradition.

Hamrick credits Linda Stilley with instilling her love of line drawing and the quick, unlabored sketch, a foundation she builds upon by hand-tearing and reassembling misprints into new compositions. Out of this practice came her frog goddess, a recurring figure that has become something like a self-portrait rendered in symbol rather than likeness. Her palette has shifted over time as well, moving away from the vibrant colors and layered tissue paper of her earlier work toward the earth tones that now define it, a change she traces to her first residency in Ireland and the discipline of working with only the limited supplies she could carry.

LESLIE HAMRICK: VESSELS & ALTARSCAPES | PART IV

In Part Four, Leslie Hamrick talks about her ongoing exploration of Heket, the ancient Egyptian frog goddess, whom she first encountered at an artist retreat in 2021. She describes the pull she felt toward Heket, having become an empty nester in 2020, finding in the goddess a fitting symbol for transformation and rebirth at that stage of her life. She also speaks about the Sheila Na Gig sculptures of Ireland, figures she finds striking and connects to Heket through shared themes of fertility and evolution. These threads are showing up directly in her current frog designs, which draw on the goddess’s place in both Egyptian and Irish traditions and on the long association of frogs with spring and metamorphosis.

LESLIE HAMRICK: VESSELS & ALTARSCAPES | PART III

In Part Three, Leslie Hamrick talks about the formation and ongoing work of The Well, a collective of women artists scattered across several states who came together to support one another creatively and professionally. She describes how the group took shape with the guidance of a mentor early on, and grew over time to include artists from Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, with another member joining more recently to round out the circle. The women meet regularly over video calls to share new work, offer critique, and keep one another encouraged through the everyday demands of a studio practice. The Well has already mounted a show built from a shared residency experience in Ireland, and the group maintains ties through the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA). Looking forward, they are working toward another exhibition planned for late 2027.

LESLIE HAMRICK: VESSELS & ALTARSCAPES | PART II

In Part Two, Leslie Hamrick continues her conversation with Steve Liggett about Vessels & Altarscapes, describing how the landscapes of Ireland, its ancient stone walls and quiet cityscapes, shaped the exhibition and led to her first altarscape. She speaks about a working method that resists a straight line, favoring instead a slow accumulation of figures and forms, and about a torn paper technique she calls “blind tearing,” used to loosen her hand from habit. The discussion turns to her piece “Collective Connection,” a collage built from many drawn figures that speaks to the layered nature of who we are, built as we are from the people and places that have touched our lives.
