I pulled this painting off the shelf and reorchestrated a portion of it. I’m much happier with it now. My goal was to play some subtle notes of color in the sunlit snow without losing the overall cool tones of the shadow. Sometimes subtle marks make all the difference.

Here’s another painting inspired by my trip to New Mexico earlier this summer. The Low Road to Taos runs along the Rio Grande and provided a lot of chances to pull off, take in the light, and wade in the water.

This is the first painting I’ve done from reference photos I took on my recent trip to New Mexico. One day while driving from Santa Fe to Taos, I stopped several times along the Rio Grande. Though most of my photos were of the river, at one point I turned and saw the sagebrush glowing in the sunshine beneath the wall of rock that towered above us.

You never know what you’ll find online when someone cleans out their studio or closets. A friend of mine and I went in together to buy this roll of Wallis Professional Grade pastel paper (9 yards by 49 inches). It’s a roll of the later run of Wallis paper, but I’m thrilled to have it!
