Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day from all of us at Gilcrease!

Dan Namingha’s Pueblo Sunset (1978) is the first painting to be hung in our new galleries, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Dan is a Hopi-Tewa artist and in this painting he depicts his Hopi home.

Dan was born in Keams Canyon, Arizona, and now works out of Santa Fe. His paintings are in collections from the Smithsonian to the British Royal Collection. He’s the great-great-grandson of Nampeyo.

We’re so excited that this is the first piece to get its spot on the wall, and on Indigenous Peoples’ Day it feels like exactly the right place to start.

Gilcrease is now accepting applications for our Spring 2027 Academic Internship, and it's paid ($17/hr)!

If you're an undergraduate or graduate student curious about museum careers, we'd love to hear from you. You'll work alongside museum professionals and mentors on meaningful projects, gain hands-on experience, and build your portfolio along the way.
