It's not your fault do your best :)
Hi, y'all, I've been away for a wee bit, I know, and to those that have took the time to try and get to know us beyond the page, and see us as the human beings that operate the page, I'd like to apologise for my absence, but I can't promise I'll be back to the semi regular posting I was doing before, any time soon, but how are y'all doing?
For those that would like the explanation, I'd like to say I'm okay. I'm not "great", but I'm coping, and that's the best I can say right now, without lying or masking.
Back in late August, I was given the opportunity for a sort of promotion, at my workplace, going from a full-time dishwasher (kitchen porter is the title), to a part-time commis chef, and this is the part that ties into the graphic below — it's a "glamour job".
It's one of those jobs that you see on public television, with TV chefs doing what they do, and it looks like they're doing what they love, but the part that they never tell you, is the toll it takes on you as a person; the sacrifices you make, not only to your social life: when I'm in whites, I'm working 9-10-hour days (and it's going to get even worse, come mid November, as we step into the winter season), and I'm lucky if I get the chance to have something to eat, a sit down, and a smoke, each shift, just to be able to clear my head.
I don't get a lot of time to spend with my siblings, or work on the page, or hang out in voice channels, on discord, with my friends, because I'm up early for work, and I get home late; on my days off, I'm so exhausted, that I'm struggling to do anything even remotely "me", that I find enjoyable. The amount of nights this past couple weeks that I've collapsed with my tablet in my hand, whilst trying to read a comic... I've lost count, really. I wake up in the middle of the night, see the time, put my tablet on the shelf, phone on charge, and go back to sleep, ready to be up in a couple hours, for work again.
What I'm trying to say is hospitality as a whole... It's brutal, and I'm not the only person I know that's felt this burn. I've met a lot of great people in my time working both kitchens I've been a part of, and the turnover of staff that say they've had enough of these sacrifices is... Just something else.
I know there's a lot of rough ass jobs, and I'd like to get some insights into some of the things that you may have done that you felt were just overwhelming, either pushing you near (or even past) the breaking point, either socially, mentally, or physically? How long did you do it for? Do you still push yourself to do it (if so, I salute you - it's not something we usually give ourselves credit for)?
There's no single job on this planet that is "easy", by a long shot, and if you think there is, then I will argue that it's not a job, easy as that - we work for what we have, and work comes with struggles (even if you work through them, and don't recognise them, they're still there).
Anyways... A shout-out to those that have always offered us respect, not only as a page, but as people, I thank you all for being here. It's because of many of you, that I've got the motivation to keep going on like I do. Thank you.
