Conoco Tower — Shamrock, Texas. Green neon, blood moon, Route 66 after dark.

The U-Drop Inn's tower is one of the great pieces of Art Deco on the whole Mother Road — that fin of neon reaching up. One night the moon came up red behind it and I got maybe ten minutes.

Built in 1937, closed in 2005, sat empty for a decade and came within inches of the wrecking ball. The city restored the sign — that Indian head in the sunburst — and the place reopened in 2018. It’s on the National Register now.

Most people drive past it at noon. It doesn’t look like much at noon.

The Blue Swallow Motel, Tucumcari — under a sky that only shows up a few times a year.

Mammatus clouds, lit gold by the last of the sun, over a neon sign that’s been running since 1940. I didn’t plan this one. I’d been shooting Tucumcari for two nights and the sky did that on the way out.

I stood in front of this sign more nights than I can count, waiting for the sky and the neon to agree. One evening the desert lit up like a struck match, and this was the ten minutes that made all the waiting make sense.

Roy's Motel & Café — Amboy, California. Population: about four. The sign still burns.

Most people photograph Route 66 at noon. I never understood that. The road doesn't tell the truth until after dark — when the neon comes on, the crowds go home, and places like Roy's and the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari glow like they did seventy years ago.

I've spent years going back to these places. Same locations, different seasons, waiting on weather. Twelve of those nights became ELECTRIC MOTHER ROAD, my 2027 Route 66 calendar — and pre-orders opened this morning.
