Myra Teak is a mixed-media artist based in Tucson, Arizona, working at the intersection of abstraction, natural form, and structural design. Drawing inspiration from the colors, plants, and rhythms of the Sonoran Desert, she creates vibrant, layered artworks that balance organic textures with geometric structure. Through watercolor, ink, and paper-based techniques, Myra explores themes of memory,

resilience, and connection to place. Her work has been exhibited in regional and national juried shows, earning recognition for its unique blend of spontaneity and precision. Agree or disagree: "Talent is rarely distinguishable, over the long run, from perseverance and lots of hard work."

This summer, I’m rereading "Art & Fear" by David Bales and Ted Orland. It’s a book about the realities of creative work, and this passage really stuck with me. So much of artmaking isn’t built on talent or inspiration alone, but on showing up consistently, learning through repetition, and continuing even when doubt creeps in.

I think a lot of creatives need that reminder sometimes, myself included!

I'm excited to share that my painting "Sunrise Song" has been accepted into the 51st Annual Exhibition of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies!

This year's show is hosted by the Colorado Watercolor Society and juried by Xi Guo. It will be on view May 4–June 27 at Curtis Center for the Arts in Denver, CO.

The exhibition brings together selected work from artists across ten watercolor societies in the western United States, showcasing a wide range of approaches to watermedia.

"Sunrise Song" is inspired by the way birdsong marks the beginning of the day. A cactus wren and ocotillo are stylized through a balance of geometric structure and organic movement, while the fractured halo behind them echoes both sound and light as day breaks over the Sonoran Desert.

I'm honored to be included alongside so many talented watercolor artists from across the region.

When you try to take a photo with your artwork but you can't stop chatting long enough to get a proper shot 😂

Real roses pressed into wet watercolor during the early stages of 'Rose II'.

In the Vestige series, contact leaves traces that later become structure in the finished work. The petals act as a natural resist, causing watercolor to pool around their edges and build subtle dimensional texture as it dries. Occasionally fragments of the petals adhere to the surface, adding additional tactile details.

These imprints form the foundation from which the rest of the painting grows.

I’m pleased to share that 'Rose II' has been included in the 58th Annual Show at the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild Gallery.

In this piece, real roses were pressed into the paper to create physical traces that anchor the layered watercolor and contour work. It’s part of my ongoing Vestige series, which considers imprint, residue, remembrance, and the possibility of growth despite absence or loss.

On view March 3 – April 4, 2026.

Agave Rising is currently on view in the Arizona Aqueous XL exhibition.

Look closely.

The flowers may be what you notice first, but it’s the network beneath it that keeps everything intact.

In Rose II, real roses were pressed into the paper to leave their imprint, and from there the structure unfolded outward. Veins. Pathways. Support systems.
