“I fight pain and fear with art.”
Yayoi Kusama 1929-2026
If Dolly was an icon of using creativity to spread joy, Yayoi Kusama was an icon of using creativity to deal with trauma, pain and fear. And our creativity needs both.
Kusama voluntarily chose to live in a psychiatric facility for most of her adult life, where she got the support she needed personally to continue to create art.
She turned her hallucinatory ‘infinity nets’ into her signature polka dots. In 2017, we got to take part in creating an infinity dot piece at the SAM.
Part of my creative life is pure Dolly. But another part of my creativity is pure Kusama. I feel lucky to live in a world where women can express both, and the world is starting to celebrate radically personal creative expression from women.
