On an early June night, a riveting transformation occurred all around our Tohono Chul gardens. The beautiful Queen of the Night, with gorgeous white satellite-dish-shaped petals, bloomed till' the morning light came upon the horizon. For one night only, the blossoms opened up to share their melon fragrance with the night air; in hopes of attracting Hawk moths, or also known as Sphinx moths, that pollinate them to share the queen upon the sonoran desert realm.

During Bloom Night, Members watched as our Peniocereus greggii collection bloomed under Arizona's dark, twinkling sky. Many of our members took their own picture to document this amazing moment to have until the flowers bloom again next year ✨

A few of our guests shared these wonderful pictures (and edits) of their perspective on the Peniocereus greggii:
✨ Brenda Baggett took the first 2 beautiful shots on the night of the queen blooming!
✨Doona Bieg had this whimsical approach to light painting the Queen, in both UV to show how the Hawk Moth pollinators might see it or in this fun rainbow-esque edit.

With over 400 members attending, this wonderful moment was shared upon all of them, and with the massive support, this helps preserve the Desert View Trail and our Peniocereus greggii collection while we work to ensure the proper pollination and delicate nature of these special plants. 🩷

☼A few tips for coming out to the gardens during the AZ Summer☼

Although Chillin from 6-9pm, the AZ sun and heat is still very prominent. Thankfully with our shady gardens, the temperature drops, but we still want guests to be aware of staying hydrated and being safe!
✨Wear comfy, cooling clothes- no sweater weather here! ( at least till' monsoon hits)
✨Bring a reusable waterbottle- you can refill at our various water fountains or purchase chillin' drinks at our bars (alcoholic or non)
✨Wear sunscreen if the sun is still out
✨Watch where you step! We have our gardens lit up, but we are still out in nature so be aware of your surroundings!
✨Bring a handheld fan to cool down even more !
✨Watch out for heat exhaustion and know the signs, be prepared to know if you need help!

The Queen has finally arrived. 👑
This members-only evening celebrated one of the Sonoran Desert’s most spectacular plants. Members got to experience the beauty and sweet-rich melon fragrance of the Queen of the Night, wander luminaria-lit trails, experienced the fleeting beauty of the blossoms at peak, enjoyed educational presentations, browsed queen plants for sale in the greenhouse, and explored the annual Queen of the Night art exhibit.
