Flax fiber is processed into pulp during a four hour cycle in our 25lb Valley be**er. We make about 100-250 sheets from each batch, depending on the dimensions and weight of the paper.

Grateful for this new addition to the Cave Paper studio, a beautiful Howard Clark 20 Ton Press built by Lee McDonald. It was originally purchased in the early '90s by the National Archives as part of a plan to make paper on site, which did not come to fruition.

Thank you to the National Archives Conservation Department for wanting to give this press a new life, and a big thank you as well to Aaron at TALAS for connecting us and coordinating the entire hand-off.

Of course, in true archivist fashion the press arrived with original instructions and envelope..!

Looking forward to pressing many, many sheets of paper with this beauty in the years to come.

Flax! This beautiful fiber is the basis for (almost) every design in the Cave Paper catalog. It is the magic ingredient behind the paper's strength, texture, and durability.

Aside from its material beauty, flax is also one of the most sustainable natural fibers available. It requires minimal water to grow, no harsh pesticides or fertilizers, and creates very little waste as nearly the entire plant can be used.

As it grows, flax absorbs and stores more carbon than it releases, acting as a carbon sink. Its root systems also make a great home for beneficial fungi, which improves the health of the soil and the surrounding ecosystem. WE

Many of our designs rely on layers and layers of natural dyes built up over time.

These flax papers have been dipped in indigo four times, followed by several applications of walnut dye. Between each layer of dye, the paper must dry fully. The walnut dye also needs time to set for about a week between each pass. It is a constant lesson in patience!

With every new application of dye, the color deepens and shifts.
