Wind Dancer Design Studio

Wind Dancer Design is the art, craft and design studio for Pamela Powers. I started this small business in the early 2000s as an outlet for my decorative clay wall hangings, mosaic shrines, handmade jewelry, and other handicrafts.

For years, I sold my work through the galleries and shops in downtown Tucson, such as the Bohemia, Central Arts Gallery, Tucson Museum of Art, Dinnerware Art Space, and Tohono Chul Park, in northwest Tucson. Participating in the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) Open Studio Tour was the high point of my year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the art scene that thrived in downtown. Multiple economic downturns - - created by the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the Wall Street crash of 2008-09, and now the COVID19 pandemic of 2020 -- hurt the arts and crafts businesses in Tucson.

When the developers took over downtown, they converted the funky, local bars and eclectic galleries into bigger bars, fancy restaurants, and posh hotels. Bohemia and the Open Studio Tour were my best outlets. When Bohemia closed and the City of Tucson stopped backing TPAC and the arts, it was a sad day for many local artists. Sales dropped dramatically, and I sadly relinquished by business license. How many other local artists stopped selling but never stopped creating?

The creative spirit of Wind Dancer Design didn’t die when the business license ended. That is evidenced by the many arts and crafts projects and ideas that I have shared on my personal Facebook and Instagram accounts over the years.

As you may know, besides being the creative force behind Wind Dancer Design, I am Rep. Pamela Powers Hannley, representing LD9 in the Arizona Legislature. Many people follow my political career through social media, but others seem to be more interested in my crafty projects and new adventures -- like making COVID19 face masks, recycled fashion design, decoupage, home decor projects, gardening, intentional journaling, simple living, or playing the accordion in a “girl ban.

In talking with one of my volunteers before the 2020 election, I asked, “Did you see my new campaign video?” She said “no” sheepishly but added that she watched all of my videos about redesigning men’s cut t-shirts and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Thus, I decided to revive Wind Dancer Design and use this page as an outlet for crafty ideas to beautify or otherwise improve your home and your life.

Here we are on November 27, 2020. The COVID19 pandemic is ramping up all over the country. Many people -- including me -- spent Thanksgiving alone because of the virus. There’s talk about another economic shutdown. Joe Biden is president elect, but he can’t fix everything immediately. What better time to hunker down and start a new journal, pick up an old musical instrument, or take up a new craft like baking, sketching, or gardening? Let’s explore new and old ideas together.
