Tucson Flamenco Studio is the only dance studio in Tucson that is 100% dedicated to teaching the art of flamenco. Our mission is to offer students the most authentic flamenco experience possible in the studio, on the stage, and through the culture of flamenco. Regarding the teaching and preservation of flamenco, we have three major goals:

Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo, directed by Jason and Mele Martinez, is a performance group presenting authentic dance and music in the cultural tradition of Andalusian Gypsy flamenco. Live guitar, singing, and percussion accompany dance ranging from the most authentic solo improvisational dance art to exciting modern group choreography. Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo was created in Tucson, AZ in 2006 by flamenco artist Mele and Jason Martinez. Both have studied the art form extensively both in Spain and in the United States, with most of their training based at the National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts and the National Institute of Flamenco. Both were corps members and soloists for the American Flamenco Repertory Co. Both tour throughout the US and beyond with some of the best flamenco companies and musicians in the country. In Tucson, Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo also presents accomplished musicians Misael Barraza, winner of several prestigious awards in Flamenco Guitar both in the US and in Spain, and Macarena Giraldez, flamenco singer from Sevilla, Spain, who studied the art and culture of flamenco from her mother who was also a flamenco singer in Spain. Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo offers classes and workshops for the Tucson community and beyond. They are the only artists in the Tucson area of such expertise who teach flamenco dance, percussion, and song. This past September, Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo helped to bring about, in coordination with Club Espana and Casa Vicente Spanish Restaurant, the 3rd installment of the Tucson Spanish and Flamenco Festival! This annual event is a labor of love undertaken to bring high quality art, entertainment, and education to our beloved city! Displaying some of the highest level flamenco perormance in the USA, this event has evoloved into a much anticipated event. About Jason
Jason Martinez, a flamenco dancer and cajón player, found flamenco through the dance program at the University of New Mexico, with instructors Eva Encinias-Sandoval and Pablo Rodarte. Having developed a genuine love for and dedication to flamenco, Jason traveled to Sevilla, Spain to study the art form. He has since studied extensively at the National Institute of Flamenco under Joaquin Encinias and Omayra Amaya and became an instructor for the Institute of both dance technique and cajón. Indeed, study with these accomplished instructors has made Jason a talented instructor himself. Jason became an original member of Yjastros, The American Flamenco Repertory Company in January 2001 under the direction of Joaquin Encinias. He performed with the company in nine concert seasons including tours of the Southwestern United States. He became a soloist for the company in Fall 2005. Jason now resides and teaches in Tucson, AZ and has toured nationally as a soloist, most recently with Bay Area flamenco artists Yaelisa, Jason McGuire, Jose Cortes and F***y Ara. Jason is an example of an artist cultivated through the New Mexican flamenco movement. He is joined in this group by other accomplished flamencos such as Gabriel Osuna, Vicente Griego, and Ricardo Anglada. About Mele
Melani “Mele” Martinez grew up in Tucson, Arizona where she began studying dance at three years of age with Leticia Durazo. She became involved in flamenco under the instruction of Olivia Rojo and soon joined Rojo’s company, Flamenco Y Mas. In 1996 she began performing throughout Arizona as a soloist and gained recognition as a gifted mover and choreographer. Mele traveled to Sevilla, Spain to attend workshops with world-renowned artists Juana Amaya and Matilde Coral. Mele started attending Festival Flamenco Internacional workshops in 1993 and was tremendously inspired by the effort of the National Institute of Flamenco in its dedication to the art form. She went on to join, as an original member, Yjastros, The American Flamenco Repertory Company under the direction of Joaquin Encinias in 2001. In addition to her role as company member, she has been featured as a soloist for Yjastros. Mele now lives and teaches flamenco in Tucson, AZ and has become a national touring artist with recent appearances at the famous Alegria tablao and Fountain Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
