Another incredible exhibition on view at the UA Museum of Art! Meet the artist, Marlowe Katoney this Thursday from 6-7:30pm, during the Fall Exhibition Opening Celebration!
Artist Marlowe Katoney's "Axis Radius" series reflects on his experience of dance culture, a specific and memorable time in his life. He shares, “ When I was in college, I used to always look forward to going out on Friday and Saturday nights. We would go out to underground parties, and breakdancing was much a part of that movement.”
This weaving, "Axis Radius #6: Pareidolia Overture," depicts a breaker rising up like a tree of life. Marlowe says, “It’s meant to reflect our investment in our young people, changing times, changing culture. Native culture isn’t all about horses, sheep, trading posts and rodeos; it’s about much more. I think too many people get caught up in what they feel like Native art should look like.”
"Axis Radius" was named for the long-running Scottsdale dance club, which closed in 2013. Check out the whole series in "Pulse: Weavings and Paintings by Marlowe Katoney," now on view at UAMA!
