We talk about oil as pollution-because it is.
It chokes ecosystems, poisons water, reshapes coastlines. But we rarely ask a different kind of question:

What if oil served a purpose before we ever extracted it?

Maybe it isn’t Earth’s waste.
Maybe it’s more like bone marrow or synovial fluid- something that regulates, stabilizes, or stores energy deep within Earth’s internal systems.

We’ve built an entire global economy on extraction, without understanding what we’re removing.

Shouldn’t oil companies be required to fund independent research into what role oil might have played in Earth’s long-term balance?

We require pharmaceutical companies to fund 75% of the FDA’s drug approval process.
Why aren’t oil companies required to do the same for planetary health?

We know they’ve funded misinformation.
We know they’ve shaped policy through power and lobbying. And still—they’re not required to fund even a fraction of climate or systems research.

We’ve studied what oil does to us. But we haven’t asked what oil was doing for the Earth.
