Recently converted to coil, and actually upset it took 8 years to learn these beautiful tools.
My tattoo career started with absolutely no direction. I had an opportunity to tattoo and it was up to me to figure out the rest. I was never taught how to even properly clean my ROTARY let alone understand that tool- and coils were talked about as a HUGE negative in the beginning of my career: heavy, loud, and inconvenient.
With the help of (Danny - who more so bullied me to use coils) and the brothers (Art and Steve), my ignorance was more of a joke than anything.
Holy f**k. I love my machine. I’ve never felt more confident packing colors, blending soft grey washes, and even pulling some mean bold lines. I have taken her apart a few times, refined her here and there; it was a absolute joy learning this new language, which in turn has made me feel more connected to what the f**k I’m actually doing to someone’s skin.
Danny, who currently is working hard on his coil machines for sales/tuning services, has helped me learn the feel and tune of my machine- where we tuned my pink pl***oy MudFlap to work like a dream with cartridges. I now have the luxury of convince with cart needles, and the power and performance of coils. I do still intend of having a needle on-bar machine for my ideal set up- but right now, this pretty girl does everything I need and then some.
With the industry being more divided than ever SOLEY on the tools- I think my opinion turns to understanding WHY coils lead to the tattoo advancements we have now. Everyone wanted a shortcut, coils require some patience, burnt fingers from a soldering iron, frustration with wires, and more patience. I highly encourage all to embrace the small suck in coils. Trust me.
Big shout out to Danny, Art, and Steve for not only giving me a huge missing part of my education in this industry- but really encouraging me to push myself to try someone new and learn to love it. With their gentle pushes, I’ve never felt better about what I do. Forever in debt boys. 💖
Also P.S. Lemme dress your coils, I genuinely LOVE doing it 😭
