She doesn’t paint erosion. She reenacts it.

Sarah Winkler builds her paintings with crushed minerals — mica flake, marble dust, granite, volcanic sand — worked into the paint itself, then distressed by hand with water and sanding tools. The same forces that shape a mountain over centuries, compressed into a studio practice.

We’re honored to welcome her to the Piper J Gallery roster— and honored by how she found us. Andrew Bolam, whose shows with us, has been friends with Sarah for a long time, and it was Andrew who pointed her our way.

Her work is in the permanent collection at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, has shown at Gallery MAR and Visions West Contemporary, and traveled as far as the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, Tajikistan through the State Department’s Art in Embassies program.
Right now she’s back in her Colorado studio — elevation 9,000 feet — building an entirely new winter series made just for us, ahead of her show here this December. We have three of her pieces at the gallery now. Come see them.

A myth worth clearing up: galleries don’t set the price. The artist does.

The number on our wall is the artist’s own price — the same one you’d find in their New York gallery, at a fair, or direct from their studio. We don’t mark it up, and going direct doesn’t cost less. Serious artists keep their prices consistent everywhere on purpose. It’s what keeps their market honest and their collectors confident.

So when we say a piece is fairly priced, we mean it’s fair everywhere — not just here.

Look closely — these mountains are made of roots.
Cie Hoover carves his landscapes into wood, rendering ridgelines as the tangle of roots that hold a tree in the ground. It’s a quiet idea with a lot underneath it.
Rooted Growth — 14 new carved-wood works — opens Saturday, September 5 at Piper J Gallery. Cie will be here in person, 4–7pm during the Truckee Art Walk, with an artist talk at 5. Come see how these are actually made.

Some paintings you take in from across the room. These you have to walk up to.

Each panel holds close to a hundred translucent layers of paper and acrylic — bark, light, the quiet of the forest floor, built up until the surface seems to hold its own weather. The longer you stand with one, the more of it surfaces.

Tomorrow at Piper J Gallery we open Space Odyssey — a powerful new exhibition by internationally exhibited artist Paola Bragado.

Lake Tahoe is often seen as pristine. Vast. Untouched.
But every landscape holds more than what is visible.

In Space Odyssey, Bragado explores migration, labor, belonging, and visibility within contemporary landscapes. For this body of work, she hand-sewed traditional Mexican garments and photographed migrant subjects wearing them while performing leisure activities rarely accessible to them — skiing, golfing, and standing within the iconic alpine terrain of Tahoe.

Each work exists between photography and textile. On the reverse side, intricate embroidery pierces through the image, revealing hidden narratives and histories — making visible what is often unseen.

These works will hang suspended in the gallery, allowing viewers to experience both sides of the story.

This collection is deeply personal.

After a year of walking alongside her husband through cancer treatments… after life kept handing her lemons… Susan returned to the studio and created work that feels stronger, more grounded, and more powerful than ever.

She calls her paintings non-objective — not abstract — because she isn’t distorting an object or trying to represent something.
She’s painting from within.

From a feeling.
A memory.
A piece of music.
A passage in a book.

The result is work that doesn’t tell you what to see — it invites you to feel.

Susan and I go way back — we met in 1995 when I was a hairstylist and she was my client. We painted together in a women’s painting group in Incline Village. Watching her evolution as an artist — and as a woman — has been such a gift.

After the Storm

Some collections are beautiful.
Some are powerful.
And some are born from fire.

“After the Storm” is poignantly titled after a year in which Susan’s husband battled cancer while life seemed to keep handing her lemons. What has emerged is a body of work that feels grounded, fearless, and deeply honest.

Susan describes her paintings as non-objective or non-representational — not abstracting an object, not trying to depict something seen. Her work comes from looking within rather than looking at.

A feeling.
A memory.
A moment.
Music playing in the background.
Even the emotion from a passage in a book.

There is strength in these canvases.
There is resilience.
And there is light.

Piper has known Susan since 1995 — long before either of them imagined full-time art careers. They painted together in a women’s painting group in Incline Village in the early 2000s. Over 30 years later, she’s not only honored to represent her work, Piper is truly grateful to call her a friend.
