Boardroom specs causing headaches?

🧱 If you're bidding on high-end commercial projects, mixing up Sequence Matching and Blueprint Matching can completely blow your margins and land you with a pile of rejected panels.

We just dropped a brand-new guide breaking down the differences between these two methods, what they mean for your waste factor, and how to protect your workflow in the press room:

📏Sequence Matching: The bread and butter of architectural woodwork where consecutive sheets keep a continuous, running match with a predictable 15% to 20% waste factor.

📐Blueprint Matching: The zero-tolerance masterpiece where every sheet is custom-clipped to an exact architectural coordinate, often driving waste up to 40% or 50%.

Before you submit your next commercial submittal or bid on a luxury hotel lobby, check out the full breakdown on the blog!

While a vacuum press or a hot or cold press utilizing white or yellow PVA glue is the preferred professional method for applying backed wood veneer, contact cement remains a highly accessible option for standard shop applications. Regardless of your adhesive choice, avoiding wood movement and structural cracks comes down to proper acclimation. Because veneer sheets arrive tightly rolled in shipping boxes, always unroll them, lay them completely flat with a board on top, and let them rest in your shop's environment for at least forty-eight hours before installation. This simple protocol prevents rapid moisture contractions or expansions from compromising your finished panels.

How long do you typically let your veneer sheets acclimate before pressing? Let us know below!

Can you pre-finish wood veneer before applying it? Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Watch this first. ⚠️🪵

Standard oil-based stains, penetrating finishes, or ready-mixed clear coats are fine to apply beforehand. But if you’re using 2-part post-catalyzed finishes, beware—if the finish dries too brittle, flex-bending the sheet during installation will cause it to crack.

Keep your pre-finishes flexible, or apply those heavy-duty catalyzed coats after the veneer is glued down flat.

Still struggling with a lumpy, "orange peel" texture on your wood veneer? The problem might be your adhesive. 🍊⚠️

When you're rolling out traditional liquid contact cements, they tend to cluster up and leave a bumpy profile. Any imperfections in that glue line will telegraph straight through to your finished wood surface.

💡 The Pro Fix: Switch to a gel-type contact cement.

⚙️ Because of its thick consistency, gel cement applies incredibly smooth across both your veneer sheet and the substrate. This eliminates the ridges that standard liquid glues leave behind, giving you an even, professional finish without the headache.

Don't skip surface preparation. 🪵

Applying premium wood veneer requires a perfectly smooth substrate. Any dents, high spots, or raised edges on your base material will telegraph directly through the veneer sheet, compromising the final finish.

Before applying your next piece, use a sanding block to level out any imperfections until the surface is completely flat and even. Clean off the dust thoroughly before proceeding with your adhesive.

When preparing custom wood veneer sheets for application, it might seem safer to leave plenty of extra material hanging off the sides. But cutting your veneer too oversized can actually jeopardize your entire project finish! 🪵⚠️

If you have a massive overhang while burnishing or rolling down the edges, that excess material catches and flexes. This excessive bending forces the wood grain to split and crack under pressure, creating flaws that will show straight through your topcoat. ❌

➡️ The Pro Technique: Keep your allowances tight. You only need about an eighth of an inch of overhang along each individual edge. Sizing your veneer sheet to roughly a quarter-inch oversized in total leaves plenty of room for error while keeping the edges stable and safe from cracking. 📐

Plus, minimizing your overhang saves you a ton of effort during final trimming, ensuring a cleaner, faster flush edge. 🛠️✨
