What is A LIFTED LAMP?

For Alto Section Leader Allyson Romero, the program reflects on America as a melting pot and the stories immigrants bring with them.

One of her favorite pieces, "Tchaka," brings that idea to life through music that is joyful, energetic, and rooted in Haitian Creole tradition.

What does America mean to us, and how do we hear that idea through music?

Rehearsals are underway for A LIFTED LAMP, Albany Pro Musica’s October 18 program exploring themes of welcome, belonging, and the American experience.

This rehearsal glimpse features “America the Beautiful,” one of the works helping shape the program’s reflection on the ideals, hopes, and complexities woven into our shared national story.

Albany Pro Musica will also be joined by collegiate choruses from the University at Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and SUNY Schenectady for the concert’s finale.

“Don’t call me a foreigner.”

Rafael Amor’s "No Me Llames Extranjero" returns to Albany Pro Musica’s repertoire on October 18 as part of A LIFTED LAMP.

Written by the Argentine singer-songwriter whose life and work intersected with experiences of exile and displacement, the song rejects the idea that crossing a border can reduce someone simply to the label of “foreigner.” It asks a deeply human question at the heart of this concert: what does it take for someone to be recognized as belonging?

If you’ve heard Albany Pro Musica perform this powerful work before, experience it again within a program that places its message in conversation with music about migration, memory, identity, and welcome.
