Humble in Hell

Love is a dead rose hanging
from a dead vine.
Some of it silkiness confined.
Most of it ready to crumble.
Crush it. You’ll be fine
Its residual smell,
that fruitful aroma,
Will warm you in hell,
And keep you humble.

Robot Pets

The dog marched sideways
his legs moving east to west.
I’d complain, but nowadays
This is a dog at its best.

They no longer mark the stop signs
and never look for the red fire hydrants.
They give each other high-fives
and say high, whispering in the quiet.

One tried to lick himself clean
and was fried from the wires.
These little machines are nothing
like the pets that have inspired.
Then again, there’s none of the regrets
We’re glad to have expired.
Now I no longer get my neck wet
When I say good boy, now go retire.

A Tale of Two Houses

City lights twinkling bright
Red, yellow, purple, blue
In the country I see the stars
strobing the same colors too.
In the city sounds play the music of the fools.
Honking horns, revving engines, yelling
in a crowd: “Yoo-hoo!”
In the country I listen to the quiet of the moon.
The stars whisper secrets to the grass
that the crickets shout out loud.
In the city I’ve got plenty of good-good friends
that always hang around.
In the country I play with fire ants
on top of fire ant mounds.
In the city it’s really pretty and it’s where my mother
can be found.
In the country it’s really lovely and it’s where I learn
my father’s sound.

Potty-Training the Future Poet

She said: “Onomatopoeia, onomatopoeia,”
sitting on a toilet.
I said: “No baby, that’s not how you call it.”
She said: “Onomatopoeia,” threw down a frown
and folded her little arms.
I said: “Okay, you may call it how you see it,
your father meant you no harm.
Now hurry the wee wee up.”
She raised a smile, a ti**le sound ti**led in the toilet.
She said:
“Onomatopoeia! We’re happy now?”

Public of Fools

They took the funding from the public of fools
Dropped a couple of bombs and called em jewels
And now all we got is Republican news.

They called it fake said it wasn’t true
A castle on the lake, waiting for the mote to fill too
They took the funding from the public of fools

Toilet paper, toilet brush, hammers and haircuts too
Money expenses expensively ran through
And hid it all on the Republican news

They built a shelter to store the truth
Said it was a helter skelter unglued
So they took the funding from the public. Damn fools.

Now no one can give it at all to you
The Internet is blaring tunes from cartoons
Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck present the news

Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd shooting shots at you
Don’t worry keep your ever-loving-cool
They took the money from the public of fools
And said nothing about it on the Republican news.

Stole the Blues

Hiccup, hiccup
Hiccup, it’s what I do
Pickup, pickup
The hiccup, digeridoo
The elephant tusk
Wrapped in cotton blue
We’ll look pass the irony
Of the moment
Hiccup, let it run through.
The hippie practiced with no luck
Hiccup, spittle running through
The elephant tusk
Wrapped in a black man’s
Cotton blues.
I wish I were drunk, hiccup
To explain my ones and twos
Watching the, hiccup, hippie
Warm up the digeridoo.
He played something beautiful.
Hiccup,
I was so confused.
Must have felt like a black man
Looking at Elvis’ shoes.
Yeah, they’re suede baby!
Hiccup, but you stole the blues.

Hope

Shrimp in a red bowl
Hope is clearly not for you
Give it all to me.

Viewing Stars on the Chicola

In a canoe on the river Chicola
We watched the moss dangle in the wind
Sunshine shined on my Mona
Revealing her beautifully tanned skin.
Upon her shoulders a tattoo
Of a snake wrapped around a dagger
Her blue eyes was the only medicine I needed.
She took a small bite of her sandwich
And asked me what I had conceded,

I said, nothing dear that was worth repeating.
Our love was pure as sure as the sun slid
across the beautiful evening.
I leaned in, to get a better look at the purple stars
twinkling in her beautiful eyes.
I gave her a little kiss, and believe I felt the sky
give a little cry.
A tear fell on my ear, and there was nothing I wanted to hear
Except, I love you baby and I’m glad we’re here
On the river Chicola watching the blue of the world fade away and
Disappear.
