All are invited to their opening reception on Saturday May 30th from 5-8 pm, which is also Trinidad Art Night. Enjoy snacks, a wine pour benefitting Trinidad Coastal Land Trust, live music and an opportunity to meet many of the gallery's 25 local artists.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, artist Carolyn Cook is captivated by the wild and diverse landscapes that are unique to our local area. In her work she strives to capture the wide variety of natural elements that draw our attention, such as reflections of wet sands, stormy skies, glorious sunsets and majestic redwood forests. Cook has been painting with watercolors for over 30 years and uses a combination of wet on wet and dry brush techniques. Her process allows for both creative surprises, as well as a focus on details, that celebrate our natural environment.
Ceramicist Elaine Y. Shore works almost exclusively in porcelain. She is currently focusing on a technique called “sgraffito”, whereby she throws her forms, then brushes on a black underglaze. She then carves through the black glaze into the white porcelain, creating striking black and white designs that feature whales, birds and flowers. Shore notes, “The key to sgraffito is to use line variations to invoke darker or lighter areas, very similar to block prints.” As well as being a founding board member of Trinidad Art Gallery, she is both a co-director and teacher at Fire Arts in Arcata.
