🔥 Prescribed Burn Planned Along SR-101 and SR-156 in San Benito County

CAL FIRE, in partnership with California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS), will conduct a prescribed burn along portions of State Routes 101 and 156, conditions and weather permitting.

📅 Scheduled Operations:
🔥 Wednesday, June 17, 2026 — SR-156
🔥 Thursday, June 18, 2026 — SR-101

The project will focus on reducing hazardous vegetation and fuel loading along these transportation corridors, helping lower wildfire risk in areas where past fires have been caused by vehicle-related ignitions.

🚧 Traffic Impacts:
Single-lane closures will be in effect during operations:
• Northbound SR-101
• Westbound SR-156

Prescribed fire is a key part of proactive wildfire prevention and fuels reduction efforts across California. Each burn is conducted under a detailed burn plan that considers weather, wind, humidity, vegetation moisture, and smoke dispersal conditions.

👀 Residents in the San Juan Bautista area may see smoke during and after operations. Smoke from prescribed fire is expected and is typically shorter in duration and less intense than smoke from an uncontrolled wildfire.

CAL FIRE will continue coordinating with the National Weather Service Monterey office and Monterey Bay Air Resources District to monitor conditions. The project may be postponed if conditions are not suitable for safe operations.

San Benito County has been informed of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event dependent on weather conditions and fire risk forecasts.

If implemented, the outage is expected to begin on Sunday, May 17th, at approximately 0630 hours, with estimated power restoration occurring on May 18th, between 0600 hours and 1600 hours.

The anticipated affected areas include:
• Panoche Road
• East San Benito County

A Community Resource Center (CRC) will be opened if the event does occur.

Address: 9000 Airline Hwy, Tres Pinos, CA 95075
Hours of Operation:
• Open at 0800 hrs on 5/17 and close at 2200 hrs
• Reopen at 0800 hrs on 5/18 and remain open until power is restored

On-Site Support:
Basic handouts will be available, including:
• Shade and chairs
• Recharging stations
• Snacks and water

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
