Artwork of the Day - "Inundated" - Colored pencil by Lynn Stephenson. Lynn will donate 15% to Center for Biological Diversity from the sale of this work.

Artist Statement: "Living on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan, I have experienced climate change, impacting weather systems that directly affect lake levels. High waters in the Great Lakes Region wreaked havoc on shorelines. Roads, homes, and land are being lost. For 'Inundated', I used reference photos from my own water frontage as the water rose, swallowing first the beach, then bushes and trees along the shore. Waves pummeled what was once a land locked retaining wall, holding back a small dune with my home above. I was terrified but couldn't help but see the beauty. I was inspired to produce artwork but would gladly trade that inspiration for global action to curtail climate change."

Progress update
Thought showing what pencils I've used would be interesting.
On the right are all the colors used for the wood and the water covered sand at the bottom.
On the left, colors used so far in the first layers of the lake and beginning of the clouds.
Love how the background is making the wood planks pop and look luminous in the sunlight.

Getting closer....
Still working on the water. Love trying to tackle something I've not done before. I love drawing water, but splashing water I've never tried. Pretty happy with it so far.

Welcome to my world. I’m a bit of a colored pencil fanatic. You can never have too many. You cannot have too many colors, too many brands, too many to use. The slight variations of hue, tone, saturation of color and the diversity of each brands’ characteristics within their leads is amazingly diverse - in the minutia that is the colored pencil world that is.

I love the versatility of colored pencils, I love the non-toxic nature of them, I love the portability of pencils, I love that you can use them on paper, wood, acetate, linoleum, and countless others. They require no solvents, yet you can also use them if you want. They require no clean up after use. Colored pencils are perfect for highly detailed work or wonderfully expressive in an impressionistic style. There are waxy leads that can be built up layer upon layer into what can only be described as an oil painterly appearance, or leads that are water soluble and can be blended like watercolors. I love this medium!
