I reflect a lot. I guess that’s part of the job description — appreciate, observe, reflect, repeat. Clay allows me to translate all of it into something tangible for someone to see what I’ve pored over and hopefully identify with it in some way. My latest reflections have been about what exactly clay does. It bends and sticks and dries, but even more than that, it also holds and hears and shows.

Clay connects.

The stray fingerprint you might find on a handmade mug connects you with its maker. Old pottery passed down for generations or read about in books connects you with history. The random wheel throwing class you might attend on a Tuesday night connects you with people. Maybe it’s actually connection that I’ve been fixated on lately and how blessed I feel to be someone that witnesses how clay is a conduit for connecting people to one another, who otherwise wouldn’t ever be acquainted if it weren’t for playing around with mud in a dusty pottery studio.

With all of the everything going on, my hope is that you also do some reflection. Maybe do some thinking about clay. But most of all, I hope you find connection to someone or something that makes you feel anchored and helps you find some peace.

We could all use a little more of that.

About this time last year, we upgraded my studio space. I moved from the tiny back room in our basement and took up residence in our garage. It’s not been this clean since that day, but so many wonderful memories have been made here over the span of the past year.
