Slightly different post from our normal holiday decoration theme. This may not come as a surprise to you, but in addition to doing Christmas Light shows and singing pumpkin patches, we are also big into citizen science. For example; we have a seismograph installed right here at BLHM. We are also have a Tracy Seismograph FB page & YouTube channel where we have two different live streams running.. sometimes it is pretty cool what you can see on the streams.. for example a spectogram where you can see whale clicks & song in the San Francisco Bay or off the coast of Pt. Things you can see on a seismograph... The vertical "pops" in the spectrogram and the bursts of amplitude on the wiggly line spectrogram are whales clicking. The swell in amplitude on the right side of the display is the whales singing but we only see the harmonics below 15 hz that the spectrogram is tuned for. There are 6 whales in the San Francisco bay right now and their clicks and songs are being picked up by a station near to the bay.
Modern, sensitive land-based seismometers (including citizen science tools like the Raspberry Shake devices) located up to 5.5 km inland can detect fin whale songs
A seismograph can detect whale clicks because sound waves are physical vibrations, and s***m whale clicks are the loudest biological sounds on Earth. When a whale clicks, the acoustic energy is so immense that it physically shakes the seafloor, translating sound into seismic data. When the whale's click hits the ocean floor, a transition called acoustic-to-seismic coupling occurs, The high-pressure acoustic wave traveling through the water column strikes the muddy sediment of the seafloor. The water molecules physically push against the solid matter of the Earth's crust. This pressure transfer converts the water's sound wave into a P-wave (primary compressional wave) that travels through the rock, exactly like a minor earthquake wave.
