Maryland Shakespeare Company

Maryland Shakespeare Company Maryland Shakespeare Festival is now Maryland Shakespeare Company!

Maryland Shakespeare Company (MSC) is a professional classical theatre company in residence at Goucher College, located in Towson, Maryland. With an equal emphasis on education, training, and performance, MSC nurtures and supports independent actors in the Shakespearian tradition, using original practice rehearsal and performance techniques. MSC believes a strong connection between actor and audie

nce is central to the understanding and continued relevance of Shakespeare’s plays, and the development of this connection keeps audiences coming back to MSC shows time and time again.

Maryland Shakespeare Company has closed its doors effective August 2015. We are so grateful to the audiences who have supported our professional and student productions and our teaching programs and have followed us through tours of Maryland parks and through partnerships with Hood College and Goucher College. We are also thankful to the many people who served on the Board and in leadership positions for their time and efforts. The many dedicated actors, directors, designers, and teachers who made Maryland Shakespeare Festival and then Maryland Shakespeare Company a thriving organization will continue to make theatre throughout the state. We wish them well, and are so deeply grateful for the support of communities from Frederick to Baltimore that made our work possible for so many rich, rewarding years.

We'd like to send a huge thank you out to everyone who came to see our production of "Romeo and Juliet" this week. Despite the threat of storms, and a few raindrops on Monday, we were able to perform all three nights for our dedicated and engaged audiences. Thank you for joining us!

A big thank you also goes to the wonderful Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre for hosting us at their lovely venue. Our run may be done, but "Catch Me If You Can" continues through July 25, and "The Addams Family" runs August 6–September 6. Support our partner company and see some great theater under the stars in beautiful downtown Annapolis!

We can't believe it's our closing night already! We've had a wonderful turn-out so far. Come be part of our final audience and see the stars under the stars (and hopefully not rain clouds) in Romeo and Juliet at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre—tonight at 8:30 p.m. It looks like if it rains at all, it will be before curtain time. So grab a friend, grab some ice cream, head down to the theater, and have a great summer night with us!

Think "Game of Thrones" has some intense family conflicts? They've got nothing on "Romeo and Juliet". Come check out House Capulet and House Montague onstage tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre. The weather looks beautiful, so bring some friends and enjoy Shakespeare under the stars!

07/06/2015

Reminder: Romeo and Juliet opens tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre. We're hoping the weather stays dry! If it looks like it only might rain, come on down anyway. And even if it's raining close to curtain time, we will wait to see if the storm passes. We won't make a final decision until 9 p.m. So keep your fingers crossed, and come see the explosive opening of Romeo and Juliet!

Two interviews in one day? Must be opening night tonight! Get to know Emily Karol, who's playing the Nurse and Tybalt.

MSC: How do you balance playing two very different characters?
Emily: I have to make clear and solid acting choices physically and vocally for each character. For the Nurse I use my whole body and vocal range, but for Tybalt everything is more centered and focused. The biggest challenge has been the moments where I'm one character and than 10 lines later I come onstage as the other. The quick turnaround can be crazy!

MSC: What's your favorite part about performing Shakespeare outdoors in Annapolis?
Emily: Shakespeare and Annapolis go hand-in-hand for me. My first Shakespeare production was "Taming of the Shrew" at ASGT in 2004. I love that just outside the ASGT walls are the sights and smells of a boat town, but once you enter through the theater doors, you are transported to another time. Also, the smell of pizza from Mangia (the restaurant next door) doesn't hurt!

Get excited, and mark your calendars for tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre.

It's the day of the show! We'll have several goodies for you today, starting with our interview of Neel Madan, who plays Mercutio and the Prince.

MSC: What is Mercutio's relationship like with Benvolio and Romeo?
Neel: Mercutio is basically Romeo's brother. Romeo is the only one that can keep up with Mercutio's wit (on a good day) and he knows this. He respects Benvolio, but it's not quite that brotherly bond that the other two share.

MSC: How does music enhance this production of Romeo and Juliet?
Neel: The music directly plays off of the themes of the show and accents the shifting moods of the play. We're using mostly contemporary songs, which I think goes to show just how universal the ideas of the play still are.

Haven't decided which day you want to come yet? No worries! Tickets are available at the door. $15, cash or check. So pick a date and get down to Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday at 8:30!

Meet Erin Branigan, who's playing our Lady Capulet, today.

MSC: How does Lady Capulet fit into the story of Romeo and Juliet?
Erin: She spends the play trying to find or forge a connection—with her daughter, with her husband, with anyone she's around. Her tragedy is that the harder she tries, the more her connections slip away.

MSC: What will audiences like about this production?
Erin: The pace—it races along. No dry, dusty, drawn out Shakespeare here! The action careens from comedy, to violence, to tenderness, to despair, all in a couple of hours. It's like an action movie, but with poetry.

Only a couple of days left until we open at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre. Make sure you've got your reservations in! 410-268-9212.

Today's interview is with Steven Hoochuk, our Friar Laurence.

MSC: Why do you think Romeo and Juliet is a perennial favorite?
Steven: I think Romeo and Juliet truly offers something for everyone: s*x, violence, comedy, tragedy, revenge, redemption, heartbreak, and hope. It is a world of passion and recklessness that appeals to us and draws us in.

MSC: What do you like most about playing Friar Laurence?
Steven: Friar Laurence struggles constantly to keep his own reckless, impulsive nature in check, and this leads to some disastrously bad choices. I enjoy telling the story of Laurence's own tragedy, which I believe is his discovery of how powerless he truly is against the preordained.

Come on out next week to see Steven and the rest of our cast in action at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre!

This week we'll be introducing you to the cast of "Romeo and Juliet" through a series of mini interviews! First up, Bob Sheire, who's playing Benvolio and Paris.

MSC: What's your favorite part of "Romeo and Juliet"?
Bob: I love that the comedy builds to a climax, and within ten minutes, we've got dead bodies everywhere. It's such a dichotomy.

MSC: And what makes this production special?
Bob: How we collaborate in our storytelling. We explore the comedy and drama fully. It's b***y, silly, and dramatic.
