🎈 WHY DIDN’T THE BALLOONS GO UP EARLIER?
If you were with us at the Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival yesterday, you probably noticed something:
The balloons didn’t begin going up until around 7:00 PM.
The sky may have looked fine at times. The field was full. People were ready. We were ready.
But our pilots were waiting.
A storm cell was moving through the surrounding area, bringing wind with it, and our Balloon Meister and pilots were watching the conditions carefully before allowing balloon operations to begin.
While I was talking with our Balloon Meister, he said something that stopped me in my tracks.
He explained that balloon pilots have to know weather extraordinarily well because their aircraft are completely dependent upon it. Then he essentially said:
“If a meteorologist gets the forecast wrong, people complain. If we get it wrong…well, you know what can happen.”
That puts waiting into perspective.
🎈 A hot air balloon is an aircraft.
And the person standing beside it isn’t simply someone who knows how to inflate a balloon. They are a pilot responsible for an aircraft, its passengers, crew and everyone around it.
They aren’t just looking up and asking, “Is it raining?”
They are evaluating wind speed and direction, changing conditions, winds above the surface, approaching weather, storm outflow and what those conditions could mean during inflation, launch, flight and landing.
And sometimes that means hundreds or thousands of people are standing in a field looking at a beautiful sky wondering:
“What are they waiting for?”
They’re waiting because they know something most of us don’t.
Yesterday, they waited.
And eventually the conditions allowed us to put balloons into the Smoky Mountain sky.
Could that have meant the balloons never went up at all? Absolutely.
As disappointing as that would have been, we will always stand behind our Balloon Meister and pilots when they make that call.
There are a lot of moving pieces behind a balloon festival that the public never sees. Weather is one of the biggest—and the final decision about whether a balloon operates belongs to the aviation professionals responsible for doing it safely.
So the next time you’re at a balloon event and find yourself wondering why everyone is standing around waiting when the weather looks perfectly fine, remember:
We see a beautiful sky.
They see flying conditions.
And those are not always the same thing.
