The fairgrounds may be quiet right now, but they are never really empty.

Every barn, every grandstand seat, every stretch of track and every old building holds a piece of Topsham Fair history. For generations, this fair has been built around agriculture, livestock, harness racing, community, and the people willing to put in the work to keep those traditions going.

Over the coming months, we’re going to share more of that story — old photos, fair history, museum pieces, behind-the-scenes projects, livestock traditions, and some of the people who have helped shape the Topsham Fair into what it is today.

The fair is only six days a year.

The history behind it lasts much longer

U Know I Know and Ken Watson made Topsham Fair history by setting a new track record for two-year-old trotting geldings, while Princess Caledonia set a new track standard for two-year-old filly trotters!

And that was only part of an incredible week of racing.

In all, five new track records were established at the Topsham Fair this year!

What an amazing year for harness racing at Topsham. Congratulations to all of the horses, drivers, trainers, owners, and everyone who helped make 2026 one for the record books!

One week ago, the gates closed on the 2026 Topsham Fair. Now the work begins on what comes next.

For 2027, we want to put a stronger focus on what agricultural fairs were built around in the first place: livestock, farming, competition, craftsmanship and education.

We’re taking inspiration from the 1940s, when the barns, exhibit halls and pulling rings were the heart of the fair.

That means more emphasis on cattle, oxen, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and other livestock. More agricultural exhibits. More old time skills and demonstrations. More antique tools and equipment. More opportunities for children and families to see, learn and experience where these traditions came from.

We still want the excitement, entertainment, food and fun that people expect from the Topsham Fair, but we also want to make sure agriculture is not just something happening in the background.

We want it to be one of the main reasons people come through the gate.

Our goal is not to recreate 1940 exactly. It is to bring the spirit of that era forward and give the next generation a chance to experience the roots of a true Maine agricultural fair.

The 2026 fair may be over, but 2027 is already beginning.

It’s time to bring the farm back to the forefront of the Topsham Fair.

Come check out the Coin Show this Sunday at the Topsham Fair Exhibition Hall!

Doors open at 9:00 AM and the show runs until 2:30 PM.

Whether you’re a serious collector, just getting started, or simply enjoy looking at coins and pieces of history, stop in and see what you can find.

The Exhibition Hall kitchen will also be open for breakfast and lunch, so come hungry!

What an incredible display of creativity and talent! Every bale was fabulous, and we loved seeing the time, imagination, and hard work that went into each one. 🌾👏

MEET THE BOARD SERIES:

Chainsaw Carver

It’s easy to tell someone else’s story. Telling your own is a little harder.

For many years, most people at the Topsham Fair probably knew me as the chainsaw carver. I came to the fair, fired up my saws, made some wood chips fly, carved a few pieces, talked with people, and hopefully added a little something special to their day.

But over the last year or so, the Topsham Fair has become something much more personal to me.

Most people see the lights, the rides, the animals, the music, the pulling track, the food, and the families walking through the gates.

What they don’t always see are the months of meetings, phone calls, repairs, planning, worrying, problem solving, early mornings, late nights, disagreements, laughter, and countless hours given by people who simply want to see this fair continue.

Toby was the one who really opened that door for me. He brought me in, gave me a chance to become more involved, and has stood beside me through more than he probably realizes. Kathi welcomed me, encouraged me, and trusted me to find my own place here.

And somewhere along the way, the rest of this board stopped feeling like just a group of people running a fair.

They became family.

Every one of them has taught me something. They have shown me what dedication looks like, what community looks like, and what it means to protect something that has existed long before any of us were here.

That may be the biggest thing I’ve learned.

We don’t own this history. We’re simply the ones trusted with it for a little while.

Someday, somebody else will be standing where we are standing now. Somebody else will be fixing these buildings, opening these gates, welcoming families onto these grounds, and trying to figure out how to keep this old fair moving forward.

So instead of making this post about me, I want to use it to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone that has had a part in making this fair successful throughout the generations.

Thank you to every member of the Topsham Fair Board for allowing me to work beside you, learn from you, laugh with you, struggle with you, and be part of something I’ve grown to care very deeply about.

I may still be the guy with the chainsaw making wood chips fly…

But the Topsham Fair has given me something far greater than a place to carve.

It gave me a place to belong.

And for that, I will always be grateful.
