WE'VE EXTENDED THE APPLICATION DEADLINE!! The NOTO Resident Artist program for 2026-27 application deadline has been extended to April 30!!

This program is designed to provide selected artists with the resources, space, and support needed to develop their artistic practice and launch their art careers and businesses.

The NOTO Resident Artist Program will grant one emerging artist a year-long residency that includes:

• Private Studio Space: A dedicated studio space to create and develop a body of work, providing the artist with a conducive environment for artistic exploration.
• Amenities: Unlimited access to the Avant Gard Underground common space, which includes facilities for collaboration, networking, and community engagement.
• Classroom Access: Eight hours per month of classroom space for workshops, classes, or community events that the artist may wish to host.

To apply for this residency, artists must submit the following materials along with completing the application form:
1. Digital Portfolio: A collection of recent works that demonstrate the artist’s style, techniques, and range.
2. Artist Bio: A brief biography outlining the artist’s background, education, and artistic journey.
3. Artist Statement: A statement that conveys the artist’s vision, themes, and the mediums they work with.
4. 500-Word Essay: An essay detailing how the residency will help launch the artist’s career and business, including specific goals for their artistic and entrepreneurial aspirations.

To be eligible,
• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
• Selected artists will be required to sign the NOTO lease and all associated paperwork, including the code of conduct.

Entries will be reviewed and selected from the NOTO Artist Committee recommendations with NOTO staff approving final selection. The selection process will focus on the artist’s potential for growth, the quality of their work, and how they plan to utilize the resources provided by the residency.

In return for the studio space and amenities, the awardee will be expected to:
• Provide no less than 24 hours of volunteer work at the NOTO Art Center each month, contributing to the center’s operations and community initiatives.
• Develop a cohesive body of work or equivalent to be presented at the conclusion of the residency.
• Submit a 500-word essay at the end of the residency reflecting on their experience and the impact it had on their artistic career.

The NOTO Art Center believes that this Resident Artist opportunity will not only support individual artists in their creative pursuits but also enrich the local arts community by fostering collaboration, education, and engagement. By providing resources and a platform for emerging artists, we aim to cultivate a vibrant artistic ecosystem that benefits both the artists and the community at large. CALL FOR ART
Wish You Were Here: The Vacation That Never Was
A Community Art Exhibition at the NOTO Arts Center

The NOTO Arts Center invites local artists of all ages to submit artwork for “Wish You Were Here: The Vacation That Never Was,” a companion exhibition to our summer installation, The Great American Roadtrip.

This companion exhibition celebrates the trips we dreamed of taking, the places we hoped to see, and the adventures that lived only in our imaginations. Artwork may be inspired by a place you have already visited, a destination you have always wanted to explore, or somewhere you plan to visit in the future. Previously created pieces are welcome; there is no date‑of‑creation requirement.

Theme: Artists are invited to submit work inspired by:
• A place you have visited that left an impression
• A destination you have always wanted to see
• A trip you planned but never took
• A childhood dream location
• A magical or imaginary version of America
• A roadtrip detour that led somewhere unexpected
Artwork may be whimsical, nostalgic, surreal, realistic, or imaginative. The goal is to spark curiosity and invite families to imagine their own adventures.

Who Can Participate This exhibition is open to:
• Local professional and emerging artists • Youth artists (with a special youth section)
• Community members who enjoy creating
All mediums are welcome, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, mixed media, fiber, digital art, and assemblage.

The Great American Roadtrip installation invites families to explore the country through imagination and play. This companion exhibition expands that journey by showcasing the creativity of our community and the stories behind the places that inspire us. Each artwork becomes another “stop” on the adventure.

Artwork Guidelines
• All mediums accepted
• Family‑friendly content
• Wall‑mounted work must be ready to hang (no sawtooth hangers)
• 3D work must be stable and self‑supporting
• Maximum size: 18x24 inches for wall pieces unless otherwise approved
• Previously created artwork is welcome; no creation date restrictions

Last week we celebrated with Mayor Padilla for his final Mayor’s Art Initiative reception. We are incredibly proud to be able to share this initiative with Mayor Padilla, and give opportunities for Artist to showcase their artwork in the mayors office. This initiative has truly been a humbling experience for many and we are blessed to have a mayor who truly understands the power and importance of art. A heartfelt thank you to Mayor Padilla and 785 Arts curator Lisa Baker for the incredible work that they have done over the last four years.
