🌺 Amapola Restore: Grief, Memory & Community 🌺

Grief is not something we “get over.” It becomes part of our story, carried in memories, songs, traditions, and the people we love.

This week, Amapola Restore invites individuals and families to gather in a welcoming space for reflection, connection, and creative expression. Through music, movement, conversation, and shared experiences, we’ll honor loved ones, celebrate memories, and support one another in community.

Whether you choose to sing a meaningful song, share a memory, participate in movement activities, or simply be present, you are welcome here.

🌺 A little personal news…

Many of you know me through Amapola Arts as an artist, educator, and community advocate. What you may not know is that I also serve as a professor and educational consultant, working to support multilingual learners and the educators who serve them.

I am honored to share that I will be serving as Project Director for a new statewide NYSABE Bilingual Educator Pipeline Initiative at Buffalo State University, supported by a $250,000 New York State investment to help address the shortage of bilingual educators across New York.

This work is especially meaningful because it allows me to partner with my longtime colleague, mentor, and friend, Dr. Tamara Alsace, to help create pathways for future bilingual teachers.

While this announcement is rooted in my work in higher education, it is also deeply connected to the mission of Amapola Arts. We believe that language, culture, creativity, and identity are strengths. Whether we are teaching pottery, creating community art, celebrating Puerto Rican culture, or preparing future educators, the goal is the same: helping people feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Thank you for supporting all the ways we strive to build community through both art and education.

📣 Studio Update from Amapola Arts

Please note that Amapola Arts will be closing tomorrow at 3:00 PM and will remain closed all day Thursday and Friday.

We will be away participating in professional work travel and supporting a community mural project, one of the many ways we strive to connect art, education, and community beyond the walls of our studio.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Saturday. Thank you for supporting our family-run creative space and the community-centered work we love to do.

🌈 Happy Pride Month from Amapola Arts! 🌈

At Amapola Arts, our mission is simple:

To be a welcoming space to learn, create, and grow together.

And our vision guides everything we do: To be a space where people feel at home creating, sharing their stories, and connecting.

These are not just words on a website, they are values we work to live every day.

For many years, Nino and I have carried Peace, Love, and Joy as our Mucho—our North Star. It is a simple phrase, but one that guides how we live, create, teach, and build community. It reminds us that every person deserves dignity, kindness, and respect.

That spirit extends to every person who walks through our studio doors and to the friends, family members, neighbors, artists, and community members we hold close. We stand proudly with you.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we recognize that belonging requires more than simply saying everyone is welcome. It requires listening, learning, growing, and creating spaces where people can show up fully as themselves.

We strive to be more than allies, to be accomplices in the ongoing work of equity, dignity, and respect for all people.

This month, we encourage everyone to learn something new, listen to someone’s story, and peek through a window into experiences different from your own. Through understanding, we build stronger and more compassionate communities.

Most importantly, let us respect people for who they are…no more and no less.

Peace.
Love.
Joy.

Our Mucho.

Happy Pride Month from our family at Amapola Arts.

✨ Behind the Scenes at Amapola Arts ✨

One of the things many people don’t see after a Create in a Day workshop or private pottery party is what happens next. 🏺

After everyone heads home, we spend hours unloading kilns, sorting pieces, glazing, firing, and carefully preparing each creation for its final transformation. Every mug, bowl, sculpture, and masterpiece receives individual attention before it’s ready for pickup.

It’s one of our favorite parts of the process…seeing pieces that started as a lump of clay become something beautiful, functional, and uniquely made by our community. 🌿

Today was one of those behind-the-scenes glazing days, filled with shelves of work from recent Create in a Day participants and private events. We can’t wait for everyone to see the final results!

Thank you for trusting us with your creative experiences and for keeping our kiln busy. ❤️
