Articulate Theatre Company

Articulate Theatre Company Performing Arts Theatre company with a mission to 'articulate' the value of art to our community.

“Articulate” theatre is theatre that is well-crafted - verbally, visually, aurally, and most importantly, story-wise. Our goal is simple: we strive to create theatre about timeless issues, that is articulate, and also articulates those issues. We thrive on being storytellers and using all the elements of that craft to vibrantly bring to life the universal truth of the human experience and guide th

e audience to a ‘gasp’ of recognition. We are committed to challenging and connecting audiences and artists with clearly structured work that is intelligent, thought-provoking and visually striking.

Terry Schreiber has passed, from here to there. Without a Terry in the world, there would be no Articulate. He has touched the lives of every "Articulator" whether you knew him or not. But most of us did - we knew him as a teacher, an encourager, a friend, a lover of theatre and theatre people. I don't know what Terry would have thought about today's theatre scene (we often disagreed on shows) but I do know that if he had been able to, he would have been in the thick of it.

"Thanks, thanks, and ever thanks," Terry - for all that you have done for me, for Articulate, for T. Schreiber Studio, for the Indie Theatre scene, for NYC theatre, and for theatre as a whole. You will be missed.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform the T. Schreiber Community of the passing of Terry, who died peacefully in his sleep this past Friday.

We will be holding a memorial service to celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy. Specific dates, times, and location details are currently being finalized and will be shared with the community as soon as they are determined.

Whether you were close to Terry or simply knew of his reputation, today we mourn as a single community who have all been brought together through the vision and passion of Terry L. Schreiber (1937 - 2026).

Articulate Theatre Company has moved from NYC to Toms River, New Jersey. But our mission hasn't changed! This past Thursday we had our "Creation" meeting, to begin an organization for Ocean County Artists and art lovers. This group's mantra will be "a rising tide raises all boats," and we will work together to engender support for art of all disciplines, and support each other in whatever disciplines we are engaged.

We talked about the issues of audience awareness, space, and funding. We talked about the creation of a website that would have a searchable "arts calendar," using non-traditional spaces and piggy-backing off of each others work. We talked about an economic study to show how much money artists contribute and bring to our community.

We talked about needing a name for our new group!
If you'd like to hear a more detailed version of what went down, and/or would like info on how to attend our next meeting, please email [email protected], and we will be happy to share!

HONORARY AWARDS CEREMONY
NOVEMBER 14, 2021 - 7:00 PM
NEW YORK INNOVATIVE THEATRE AWARDS

The New York Innovative Theatre Awards is pleased to announce its 2021 Honorary Awards Ceremony, hosted by Shalewa Sharpe and Courtney Fearrington. This year’s celebration will take place at The Kraine Theater (85 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003) on November 14th, 2021 starting at 7pm, as well as live-streamed. You can read more about the awards and the recipients at NYITAwards.com

The NYIT Awards celebrates New York City’s independent theatre artists and this year our theme is “Celebrate Resiliency!” NYIT Co-Director Akia Squitieri says, “Along with the entire theatre industry, NYC’s Indie Artists suffered major setbacks over the past months due to Covid while also responding to the social fight against injustice. But you can always count on theatre people to bounce back and do all they can to bring their work to light. They are the most resilient people on Earth, and we plan to celebrate them for it!” Tickets are available at frigid.nyc/events/nyit-awards.

Directed by Dev Bondarin, the hybrid ceremony format (live & streamed) will include awards being presented to the following honorees: The Parsnip Ship (Caffe Cino Award Recipient); Penny Arcade & Steve Zehentner (Artistic Achievement Award Recipient); IndieSpace/The Indie Theater Fund (Ellen Stewart Award Recipient); Rachel April (Outstanding Stage Manager Award Recipient); Chris Weikel (Doric Wilson Independent Playwright Award Recipient). The evening's ceremony will feature videos, in-person speakers, and award acceptance speeches from these recipients and their supporters.

This year’s awards include the presentation of our brand new award: The Indie Theatre Champion Award. “The Indie Theatre Champion Award...,” says Co-Director Jazmyn Arroyo, “...was created to celebrate those individuals and groups who demonstrated their compassion and resiliency by helping our theatre community during the pandemic, industry and economic crises and the continued fight against white supremacy.” The 2021 Indie Theatre Champions are: Randi Berry, The Episcopal Actors’ Guild of America, Ximena Garnica/LEIMAY, JACK, Latinx Playwrights Circle, and Aimee Todoroff.

Due to Covid restrictions, there will be limited in-person seating at the Kraine Theater, but we will also be live-streamed! A limited number of live event tickets will be available for $20 for those wishing to attend in person, and the streamed version will be a pay what you can ticket model to remove the financial barriers for anyone who wishes to view the event. You can get in-person and streaming tickets at frigid.nyc/events/nyit-awards.

A year ago today we got the news - New York City theatres were being shut down, and our production of Mr. Toole along with them. Written by Vivian Neuwirth, and given a home by the good folks at 59E59 Theaters, "Mr. Toole" was hitting it's stride when the news came. Along with so very many more terrific theatre productions, the virus closed our doors.

It's been a rough year, but the good news is that theatre people have been working hard throughout this past year to build silk purses from the difficulties. Theatre will come back and, frankly, our industry will be stronger than ever before.

So, on this anniversary, we nod our head to remember the darkness of the past year, and raise a glass in expectation of the light that is coming!

2020 IS GONE!
(We aren’t sorry to see it go!)

2021 IS HERE!
And we are looking forward to building theatre back better than ever. It’s going to be a continuous work in progress, but there are so many folx out there doing all they can to make sure the lights will come back on, our boards will be trod, and stories will be told.

Here’s wishing you and yours a very happy and safe
New Year’s Eve,
and that 2021 brings you
good health, good friends, and good theatre!

Articulate Theatre Company isn't closing, but it is going on hiatus and streamlining for the future. Our Artistic Director is moving out of the city for now, and thus we are hunkering down and waiting things out until theatre gets started back up again.
