Got to see an original painting from Hermann Lungkwitz today at the Bayou Bend Collection in Houston. Lungkwitz is considered the first permanent landscape artist in Texas, arriving here in 1851. Our surname (his variant has a “k” in the middle) originated around Dresden in the Middle Ages. Both Lungkwitz and my German grandfather were born in that region, and Lungkwitz attended the Dresden Academy of Fine Art. While I’m not directly related to him, I like to think that I am in some small way keeping the Lungwitz name alive through its association with Texas landscape painting started by Hermann Lungkwitz.
