The hazelnut harvest at Nuts Edge Farm is on. Once harvested the husks (green over each nut) is fully dried by placing them on the floor and using a large fan. This takes a few days before they turn brown and open up to release each nut. Here's our pile so far this year. We should have bags ready by mid-October. Let us know via email if you'd like us to save some for you. $10/pound plus postage. "[email protected]"
First ordered first served. When they are gone, they are gone!

Here's a before and after picture comparison of our Monarch butterfly planting. The first picture was taken in 2018 when we first converted it from a farm field. We enrolled the acreage in the federal CRP and winter seeded the area with native prairie flowers. The second picture is from a couple of weeks ago (July 2026). Note that the buildings and towers in the background are the same. If you want to see a variety of native flowers and pollinators stop by and take a look. We love showing it to people. (Please call first)

Sunday evening we were enjoying the view from our deck when this rather large Bobcat strolled across our yard about 15 yards away. That was close enough!

This photo of our weather station a few minutes ago explains why I prefer winter over summer. When it gets well below zero I can put more clothes on and still go outside. A heat index over 103 degrees is simply unbearable for this northern boy! 🄵 Bring on fall!

The prairie flowers are at their mid-summer best now in our Monarch Butterfly planting. The tall yellow flowers are Cupplant, and the shorter light purple flowers are Monarda, also known as bee balm. Others flowering at this time are Black-eyed Susan, and Coneflower. The number of bees, butterflies, and birds in this field is truly amazing.
Next month the Asters, Goldenrods, and Blazing Star will be stealing the show.

We've been seeing a lot of "babies" around here lately. The fawns have been regulars this spring. This hen turkey visited us this morning with her two babies (poults). She probably laid many more eggs than that, but it's a cruel world out there. We hope these make it. They both flew into a tree on the edge of the lawn for a while, so the survival odds have improved for them because of that.

I harvested a wild turkey this morning on a neighbor's land not far from here. You could say it's organic free range turkey. It has 3/4" spurs and a 10.25" beard. They are so much fun to hunt, and GREAT on the table!
