🆕We are delighted to welcome New York based artist, Will Corwin to River House Arts for his exhibition of “Things”, a selection of cast metal sculptures from the past decade of his practice.

“Things” opens Friday, December 6 at 6 pm and runs through January 25.
  📜 ——————📜
Long fascinated by the lineage of symbols, he’s expanded on his cast metal sculpture practice by interviewing and collaborating with archeologists and art historians, investigating how certain tools and ideas move from practical uses to symbolic objects; such as hand axes and ladders, even human teeth.

Corwin’s work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, Art Monthly, The Hudson Review, White Hot, and ArtNews, among others.  In 2023 he did the Atelier Mondiale Residency in Basel, and has also done residencies at Art Omi, The Clocktower (and was a recipient of a Jerome Foundation Grant), The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Residency on Governors Island, The NADAHouse Residency on Governors Island, and the Gestatelier Residency in Hamburg, and a US State Department Artist Residency in Taipei.  He has exhibited in London, Hamburg, Beijing, Taipei, Grand-Bressac, France, and is represented by Geary Contemporary in New York.

One of Eric Wright’s themes in Ohio Lands | Land of Dust and Dreams is the promise of the Grange. A promise that has long since faded in much of rural America.

⭐️As one of the largest grassroots movements in 19th-century America, the 🏠Grange left a broad imprint on Midwest agriculture, including laws protecting farmers from practices that favored Gilded Age 💰💰Capitalists. Farmers founded the organization in response to high railroad freight rates, unfair grain storage fees, and the growing economic power of large corporations exploiting farmers.

Apart from its collective social network, its progressive ideals were unusual for the time. It was vehemently anti-racist and women were given an equal voice in its operations. (In fact no Grange could be started without women).

“I never gave it much thought once I was away, what the places were doing to me. For many years it was just the distance, the inability to be drawn back to painful memories that mattered. I could not escape myself though and the things that caused pain followed me and were active in my paintings. It took until this project to complete the circle of my relation to Mt. Gilead and Ohio.”

“In his latest series of post-modern engagements with discarded pre-modern tropes, London-based artist Eric Wright taps into {a}funny-smelling well, lifting the glossy homogenized pastoral veil from the American Midwest of his childhood to reveal the peculiar and electrifying dreamtime topography that lies beneath.”
- Doug Harvey, Eric Wright | Ohio Lands 2020

We are over-the-moon that our longtime friend Eric Wright is back to present an updated iteration of an exhibition he had originally planned for 2020! (And we know what happened then…)

In February 2022 Halima Afi Cassells created a luxurious table spread for her family on Belle Isle to mark the seventieth anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the British throne.

“The installation’s centerpiece was an ice sculpture of a swan that Cassells commissioned. Despite being situated in a frigid Detroit February, the swan inevitably melted in the winter sun, an elegiac gesture that resonates with the piece’s title and the ancient belief that swans sing one last beautiful song before they die. The mute swan is the “Queen’s Bird” in Britain, subject to an ancient law granting the monarch exclusive rights. The same bird also lives on the Detroit River, exquisitely graceful but just as invasive as any other species that arrived with the ocean-going freighters traveling the river’s shipping lanes. At the same time, Cassells’s ice swan was also a symbolic homecoming of sorts: the Anishinaabe name for Belle Isle is Wah-na-be-zee, which translates to Swan Island.”

The swan, both aesthetically and metaphorically, is a recurring figure in Swan Song, a traveling exhibition of Halima Af Cassells and Shanna Merola.

As an archetype, the graceful creature holds multiple meanings handed down through the centuries and across different cultures. According to ancient Greek mythology, the silent swan sings a beautiful song just before death.
As we stand on the precipice of collapse, in the wake of a new paradigm shift, can we also learn to experience beauty and joy amidst the terror?

Swan Song is on view now thru September 28.
Join us on September 22 at 2 pm for an Artist Talk in the Little Theater of the Toledo Museum of Art followed by a reception at River House Arts.
