This was a fun project for some wonderful clients in Lakewood. We removed some old and overgrown shrubs and plants, cleaned up their bed spaces, and planted a gorgeous perennial garden. We also removed some rotting timber retention walls and replaced them with a series of segmental block walls and steps for terraced access to the garden. We then revamped two patio areas by removing pavers and replacing them with bluestone. Existing brickwork was mimicked to create a seamless look. I love how this turned out. We were able to add what our clients wanted without destroying the existing elements that they wanted to keep and without ending up with a hodge podgy result.

Owning a small family business can be extremely challenging. Our kids have shared in the challenges. They've grown up spending lots of time on the road running errands with mom, eating way too much chick-fil-a on the run 😉, being brought along to site visits, helping with finishing touches on jobs, and so on. But we've also had loads of good times and feel blessed to have had so much time together. And now they're older and pitching in and learning new skills, Matthew working in the field and Mikaela learning bookwork...for pay of course. We work hard, together as a family, and if I stop and think, I have to say the blessings outweigh the challenges.

Ever heard of CREPE MYRTLE SCALE? Crepe Myrtle, the iconic Southern ornamental tree is hardy and produces showy color all summer long. They are a favorite ornamental tree in Virginia landscapes because once established, they are drought tolerant and love the sun. In summer they bloom in vibrant shades of pink, purple, red, or white and in winter display a lovely exfoliating bark. But did you know, there is a disease called Crepe Myrtle Scale affecting these Virginia trees right now? Its symptoms are white, fluffy dots on the trunk and limbs of the tree. This disease can seriously deplete the vitality of your Crepes, but it is treatable. If you suspect Crepe Myrtle Scale, give us a call and we'd be happy to help.

We get all the difficult jobs 😆 but we don't mind. We're glad that our clients trust our knowledge and expertise to solve their difficult landscape problems. There is a whole lot that goes into building a retaining wall. Take a look at the complicated process. For this client, we removed a failing retaining wall, stabilized a pavilion with improved masonry piers, and built a new block retaining wall - the right way.
Extensive engineering and scientific testing goes into building a proper retaining wall that will not fail. Then there is the conscientious hard work and expertise of our crew and the attention to detail that ensures that the structure will last the test of time.

Entire Landscape Design and Build Installation in Kingspoint
For the rear of this property, we built a terraced garden complete with stone staircase, boulders built into the hillside, marine grade lumber retention walls, deer-resistant plantings, and zeon zoysia sod. This terraced effect helps to prevent wash-out on the steep slope down to the water. Multiple heavy rains later and no wash-out whatsoever. Not only that, but our clients also now have a safe and gorgeous walk down to their dock.
For the front of the property, we built multiple terraced block retention walls to showcase lovely deer-resistant, hearty plantings, to prevent erosion, and to add interest to the front entry. We installed steel edging along the driveway to channel water to the drainage system. We also repaired a sunken concrete slab in the walkway, improved the drainage system, and redesigned all of the front plantings.
As you can see, this landscape is not just awe-inspiring it is functional and ready to weather any storm. At The King's Garden we believe in building beautiful landscapes that last and that provide function and practical solutions. What do you think of it? What is your favorite element?
